Lead Engineer for HVAC and Refrigeration

Position Overview:

The role of the HVAC and Refrigeration Systems Manager is crucial in maintaining the operational integrity and efficiency of our HVAC and refrigeration systems. This position will lead initiatives aimed at modernizing our systems through innovative technologies and sustainable practices, ensuring compliance with industry standards while optimizing performance and cost-effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate and implement strategies to enhance HVAC and refrigeration systems in alignment with sustainability and electrification objectives.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to a team of HVAC and refrigeration technicians and engineers, fostering a culture of teamwork and continuous improvement.
  • Stay abreast of advancements in HVAC and refrigeration technologies, evaluating their relevance to our operational needs.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of HVAC and refrigeration projects, ensuring alignment with efficiency goals and adherence to timelines and budgets.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable industry standards, codes, and regulations pertaining to HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Manage project budgets effectively, making strategic decisions to optimize resource allocation.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to promote initiatives that enhance efficiency and sustainability in HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Utilize data analytics to identify opportunities for improving efficiency and reducing carbon footprints.
  • Manage the campus building automation system to monitor equipment performance and optimize energy use.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance tasks are scheduled and executed in a timely manner through the Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to enhance the skills of maintenance staff and maintain effective relationships with university stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with project managers on construction and renovation projects, overseeing small to medium-sized projects as necessary.
  • Ensure warranty information is accurately documented and entered into the maintenance management system.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support departmental and university objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Engineering, or a related field with a minimum of three years of experience in managing HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Alternatively, an Associate's degree with five years of relevant experience or extensive experience in industrial chiller systems may be considered.
  • Familiarity with heat pump technology and its integration into commercial systems.
  • Strong project management capabilities with a proven track record in leading HVAC and refrigeration projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry standards and regulations.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Proficient in maintenance management systems and data analysis tools.
  • Universal Refrigerant Certification is required.
  • Experience with cooling tower systems and water treatment processes is advantageous.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineering (PE) registration.
  • Extensive experience with large district cooling systems and industrial chiller operations.
  • Knowledge of electrical safety protocols and experience with utility outage coordination.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform manual labor and lift heavy objects as needed.
  • Capability to work at heights and in varying environmental conditions.

Work Environment:

This position requires flexibility to work outside standard hours during emergencies or special projects.
