About Duke University Health System Clinical Laboratories

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Outpatient Phlebotomy Specialist to join our team at Duke University Health System Clinical Laboratories. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing a variety of technical procedures involved in the procurement, processing, and evaluation of patient specimens for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures, including specimen collection, processing, and analysis.
  • Prepare and initiate special tests and procedures, including cytogenetics, general laboratory, Point-of-Care Testing, urinalysis, and phlebotomy.
  • Obtain total volume, perform aliquot, and distribute all urine specimens.
  • Properly determine urine volume and label aliquot containers.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, family, and medical personnel to ensure problem recognition and resolution.
  • Utilize standard equipment to maintain positive patient identification and perform order entry as required.
  • Perform quality control, safety, and infection control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Receive and process specimens according to laboratory area procedures and protocols.
  • Participate in the distribution of specimens, supplies, and reports to the appropriate laboratory staff.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and perform routine maintenance as required.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a Clinical Tech I or Certification as a Phlebotomist.
  • Certification as a Phlebotomist by a nationally recognized board/agency is required.
  • Pediatric Phlebotomy experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification of Basic Life Support.
  • National certification as a Phlebotomist, such as the National Healthcare Association (NHA) --Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy Examination (CLPlb) or the American Society of Clinical Pathologists-- Phlebotomy Technician Examination [PBT(ASCP)].
