Job Summary

The California State University is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Grounds Maintenance Supervisor to join our team. As a key member of our Facilities Services department, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of our grounds maintenance team, ensuring that our campus grounds are well-maintained and visually appealing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of grounds maintenance staff, including gardening, grounds maintenance, and utility services.
  • Plan and schedule work activities, prioritizing tasks and reviewing work assignments to ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Provide advice and assistance to other employees in resolving technical and operational questions and problems.
  • Train and develop staff members to improve their skills and knowledge.
  • Monitor and maintain records of work activities, including estimates and actual costs.
  • Inspect and evaluate the work of others to ensure quality and compliance with standards.
  • Operate and maintain power equipment, including mowers, sweepers, edgers, and other gardening equipment.
  • Install and maintain paving, drains, benches, fences, and other structures to ensure their integrity and function.
  • Prepare infields and lines for athletic events, using hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Aerify lawns to maintain their health and attractiveness.
  • Apply pesticides and fertilizers as necessary, using sprayer attachments for tractors.
Requirements
  • Two years of experience in planting, cultivating, and maintaining flowers and shrubs, or in general grounds maintenance work.
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in planting, cultivating, and caring for flowers, shrubs, lawns, and trees.
  • General knowledge of common plant diseases, pests, and weeds, and approved methods and materials used in their control and eradication.
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
  • Ability to lay out, coordinate, and oversee the work of others.
Preferred Qualifications
  • College-level education and supervisory experience.
  • Spanish language fluency.

This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with frequent deadlines and changing priorities. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a team, and must be able to communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors.
