The Department of Public Works operates with a significant annual budget and a large workforce dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure of the city. The department is responsible for the design and management of civic buildings and streets, ensuring public safety and accessibility, and addressing various urban challenges. Public Works is committed to delivering exceptional service to all stakeholders.

The Bureau of Building and Street Repair (BSR) is tasked with providing professional construction, repair, and remodeling services for City-owned facilities. The bureau operates around the clock to ensure that essential services remain functional and oversees various maintenance projects, including paving and sewer repairs.

Public Works is currently seeking a Maintenance Manager within the Bureau of Building and Street Repair.

Job Responsibilities

Under general direction, the Maintenance Manager will be responsible for the strategic planning, scheduling, and supervision of staff involved in maintenance, construction, and repair activities across multiple large facilities and grounds. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the development and revision of maintenance and repair objectives, policies, and ongoing programs.
  • Supervising personnel engaged in maintenance and repair tasks, including emergency dispatch.
  • Assigning, reviewing, and approving work, evaluating staff performance, and facilitating their professional development.
  • Directing the work of craft supervisors and resolving jurisdictional disputes.
  • Organizing training for staff on equipment use and safety protocols.
  • Coordinating maintenance and repair projects to ensure compliance with established policies.
  • Investigating and addressing complaints, preparing correspondence, and collaborating with various stakeholders.
  • Reviewing construction documents and ensuring proper equipment certification.
  • Visiting work sites to assess project status and maintenance procedures.
  • Researching improved maintenance methods and making recommendations for productivity enhancements.
  • Developing and enforcing work standards and preparing formal guidelines.
  • Ensuring adherence to safety protocols and procedures.
  • Performing additional maintenance and operational duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
A combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. A typical qualification includes:

Experience:
Four (4) years of experience supervising skilled craft workers in maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds.

License:
Possession of a valid driver's license.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
Valid Driver's License: Applicants must possess a valid State of California driver's license without restrictions that would impede their ability to perform essential functions of the role.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with computerized work order tracking systems.
