Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Operations Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting field professionals with routine operational tasks specific to the oil and gas sector. This position is responsible for overseeing well operations, conducting well tests, and managing the operation and maintenance of field equipment and facilities. The specialist provides operational support based on their area of expertise, which may include calibrating equipment, performing routine troubleshooting, and possessing a foundational understanding of POC and Well Analyzer systems. The role requires working both independently and collaboratively to enhance production efficiency while prioritizing safety and cost-effectiveness. Utilizing data analysis, the specialist will also make informed recommendations for optimizing well performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and manage general field operations while maintaining various production operation databases.
  • Provide basic technical and mechanical support to production teams.
  • Prepare and process tickets, work orders, and administrative reports to identify trends and support operational recommendations.
  • Gather field data, analyze findings, and propose optimization strategies for well performance.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of oil and gas flow operations and associated equipment.
  • Ensure all work assignments adhere to the highest quality and safety standards.
  • Collaborate with operators to schedule and review specialist responsibilities.
  • Implement quality assurance measures with on-site contractors.
  • Timely preparation and management of work orders.
  • Identify and report any abnormal or hazardous conditions related to surface production equipment.
  • Conduct all business activities with the utmost ethical standards, ensuring the safety of all personnel associated with SM-Energy Company facilities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Technical Skills & Software Proficiency

Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office is required. Familiarity with discipline-specific software such as Aries and HIS for Reservoir, Well View and AFE for Drilling, and Oceaneering ACET, eMaint CMMS, and SCADA for Facilities is preferred. Candidates should possess the technical aptitude to adapt to related applications such as AVM, SAP, and Spotfire.

Role-Specific Knowledge & Skills

A foundational understanding of industry terminology and technical knowledge is essential. The candidate must have the physical capability to respond to emergencies, operate valves, and handle necessary tools and equipment. A valid motor vehicle record and license are required, along with the ability to climb heights of up to 30 feet. The specialist should be able to install and remove equipment following applicable safety work practices, standard operating procedures, or technical guidelines. A basic working knowledge of downhole equipment is also necessary.

Surveillance Room Responsibilities (OS II)

  • Evaluate production operations through remote monitoring of critical systems.
  • Assist in troubleshooting production equipment by leveraging historical data and settings.
  • Prioritize critical alarms based on their potential impact on production operations.
  • Identify hazardous conditions at facilities using remote camera feeds.
  • Maintain effective communication protocols with field and support personnel.
  • Document observations systematically and quantify the value added by each finding.
  • Recognize the significance of Standard Operating Practices in daily operations within the Surveillance Room.

Education & Experience

A High School Diploma or equivalent is required, with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred. A minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience is necessary, with prior experience in the oil and gas industry considered an advantage.
