Position Overview: Custom Property - Underwriter II

Job Responsibilities:

As a key member of our underwriting team, you will:

  • Evaluate incoming submissions to assess alignment with our risk appetite, focusing on complex risk selection and rejection.
  • Uphold underwriting standards by adhering to our bottom-line philosophy.
  • Operate within your designated authority while seeking necessary approvals.
  • Thoroughly document files, ensuring a comprehensive underwriting rationale.
  • Manage a portfolio of clients effectively, which includes:
    • Conducting regular production visits.
    • Performing quarterly profitability reviews of assigned brokers.
    • Identifying potential broker conflicts and successes for the Profit Center Manager.
    • Assisting in the formulation of annual business objectives for assigned agents.
    • Analyzing results and maintaining accountability for agency partners.
    • Prioritizing exceptional service and responsiveness.
    • Collaborating with other profit centers to ensure consistency across the organization.

Additionally, you will:

  • Review renewals well in advance of expiration dates.
  • Determine the appropriate notices to be sent, such as NONR or Conditional Renewal.
  • Identify risks that require referral to the Profit Center Manager, SVP, or CUO.
  • Present concerning renewals for referral at least 30 days prior to inception.
  • Review modeling data to assess any changes in risk categories.
  • Ensure compliance with filed rates for admitted renewals.
  • Verify claims information from the previous year.
  • Confirm that all subjectivities are received and documented.
  • Ensure compliance with loss control measures, if applicable.
  • Underwrite new business within the defined Custom Property risk appetite.
  • Engage in training initiatives to mentor underwriter trainees.
  • Stay informed about market trends, competitive strategies, products, and distribution systems.
  • Participate in industry events to enhance professional knowledge.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in Property Underwriting.
  • Experience working with wholesale brokers is preferred.
  • Strong technical and marketing skills are essential.
  • Knowledge of the market and regulatory landscape is required.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, customer service, relationship management, and organizational skills are necessary.
  • A college degree or equivalent is preferred; designations such as ARM, CPCU, or MBA are advantageous.
