  • These positions are field-oriented and will involve working outdoors.
  • Work hours may vary based on field activities, with a maximum of thirty-five (35) hours per week.
  • Employment duration is limited to a maximum of 1,030 hours.

Job Purpose

As a limited duration employee within the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, you will engage in various seasonal tasks and responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Transportation will be provided for all duties performed outside of the main office. Seasonal Resource Assistants (SRAs) will primarily work outdoors, contributing to the restoration and conservation of migratory fish species that inhabit both freshwater and saltwater environments. A significant focus will be on monitoring designated sites across the state for these fish species, particularly at fishways—structures that facilitate the movement of migratory fish past dams to reach vital upstream habitats.

SRAs will receive training from experienced fish biologists and will collaborate with them on various tasks. Once adequately trained, SRAs may also work independently. Responsibilities include:

  • Recording and downloading data from monitoring equipment.
  • Inspecting fishways and removing debris to maintain proper water flow.
  • Assisting in the transplantation of diadromous fish from donor streams to recipient streams.
  • Utilizing various collection methods, including trapping and netting, while being capable of wading in flowing water.
  • Identifying species and collecting biological samples for age determination.
  • Performing data entry and basic analysis, including reviewing monitoring videos and entering data into spreadsheets.
  • Maintaining facilities through landscaping, repairs, and general upkeep.

This role offers a valuable opportunity for individuals interested in fish populations and aquatic ecosystems, allowing for hands-on experience in a collaborative and educational environment.

Qualifications

  • Recent graduates with a degree in Fisheries Biology or a related field are preferred.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding fieldwork is essential.

Special Requirements

  • Incumbents may need to obtain certifications such as Basic First Aid or specific licenses depending on the role.

Physical Requirements

Incumbents must maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to fulfill the duties of the position.
