Radiation Oncology Patient Financial Counselor

Job Summary

The Radiation Oncology Patient Financial Counselor plays a vital role in providing financial counseling services for radiation therapy patients. This includes educating patients about their insurance coverage, benefits, and out-of-pocket responsibilities, as well as determining their financial ability to pay and communicating with the clinical team regarding feasibility of coverage for radiation therapy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Educate patients about their insurance coverage, benefits, and estimated out-of-pocket costs for radiation oncology treatments.
  • Determine patient financial ability to pay and communicate with the clinical team regarding feasibility of coverage for radiation therapy.
  • Provide financial counseling services regarding payment arrangements and financial assistance for uninsured and underinsured patients.
  • Compile patient estimates based on patient's insurance coverage, out-of-pocket thresholds, and treatment modalities.
  • Obtain information and signatures on financial assistance applications and route to appropriate teams in a timely manner.
  • Make hardship determinations on financial assistance applications based on current Federal Poverty Levels and established policies.
  • Set up, maintain, and edit payment arrangements on account when established.
  • Refer patients as appropriate to outside social services organizations, including Medicaid.
  • Assist patients with questions regarding their accounts, insurance coverage, and/or patient assistance needs.
  • Answer patient calls and requests promptly and efficiently, returning all messages within 24 hours.
  • Properly document all account activity in Patient Management and Electronic Medical Record systems.
  • Communicate with front office staff, clinical staff, and patient accounting regarding scheduling, patient treatment, and financial counseling needs.
  • Follow Tennessee Oncology Policy & Procedure parameters as outlined by management to ensure standardization of function.
  • Work as a cohesive team between departments to resolve patient inquiries and requests.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
Essential Competencies
  • Attendance is an essential job function.
  • Working knowledge of government and managed care benefit structures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of clinic office procedures, medical terminology, and procedures related to Radiation Oncology preferred.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and policies and procedures.
  • Ability to recognize, evaluate, and solve problems.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows-based software applications.
  • Strong collaboration with other team members required.
  • Ability to operate various types of office equipment.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with financial counseling and/or AR collections, preferably in an Oncology healthcare setting.
  • Radiation Oncology experience a plus.
  • Expertise in insurance policies and regulations related to medical billing.
