Position Overview:


The radiation therapy physicist plays a crucial role in the effective utilization of treatment planning systems, assessing treatment plans to ensure the delivery of radiation therapy aligns with the radiation oncologist's prescribed regimen, while safeguarding essential organ functions and minimizing impact on healthy tissues.

This role also involves the meticulous management of electronic medical records, ensuring accurate documentation of treatment planning progress and relevant patient information.

The physicist is tasked with executing and documenting quality assurance protocols within the clinic, encompassing software, hardware, and patient quality assurance.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Calibrate radiation therapy equipment to ensure precise dose delivery.
  • Act as the primary contact for equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Oversee the determination of radiation dose distributions for patients receiving treatment, utilizing computerized dosimetry planning or direct measurement techniques.
  • Maintain comprehensive records required for regulatory compliance.
  • Design and implement essential components of the quality management program related to external beam radiotherapy equipment.
  • Manage the medical physics service to meet or exceed established practice standards based on facility size and resources.
  • Develop and monitor procedures for assessing the performance of radiation oncology equipment.
  • Evaluate and integrate new technologies as necessary, including acceptance testing of new equipment and treatment devices.
  • Consult with radiation oncologists regarding patient doses and optimization of treatment plans.
  • Provide technical guidance to radiation oncology staff as directed by the Director of Medical Physics.
Qualifications:

  • A Master's or Doctorate in physics, biophysics, radiological physics, or health physics.
  • A minimum of one year of full-time training in therapeutic radiological physics.
  • At least one year of full-time experience in a therapy facility, including personal calibration and verification of a teletherapy unit.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of a clinical medical physics residency program is preferred.
  • Board certification by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiological Physics.
  • Strong understanding of the technical aspects of radiation oncology and medical physics to effectively perform radiotherapy medical physics and dosimetry.
  • Knowledge of radiation safety principles and current regulations from relevant state and federal agencies.
  • In-depth knowledge of modern radiation therapy systems and subsystems.
  • Experience with contemporary treatment planning software systems, with a preference for Aria and RayStation.
  • Proficiency in using radiation-measuring equipment for calibration and quality assurance in a digital environment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of all functions within a proton and photon radiation therapy department.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in computer applications including MS Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Familiarity with coding languages, such as Python, is preferred.
