The Cost Accountant plays a crucial role in ensuring that the daily operations of the Accounting department are executed efficiently. This position involves recording accounting transactions in compliance with company policies and procedures, while adhering to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The preparation and distribution of financial statements and reports must be conducted promptly.

Key Responsibilities:

Cost Accounting Duties

  • Establish and uphold cost accounting standards.
  • Perform inventory reserve assessments.
  • Collaborate with the Controller to recommend policy or procedural adjustments.
  • Accumulate and allocate overhead costs as necessary.
  • Evaluate depreciation rates, labor, and overhead, proposing policy modifications to enhance financial outcomes.
  • Estimate costs for new and proposed products.
  • Accurately categorize costs.
  • Generate and analyze Purchase Price Variance (PPV) reports.
  • Set standard costs and revise them as needed.
  • Oversee the general ledger and reconcile balance sheets.
  • Analyze raw material costs and perform cost-benefit analyses for vendor changes.
  • Provide management with reports detailing factors influencing product pricing and profitability.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries.
  • Assist with audits and general ledger preparation.
  • Support physical inventory processes.

Analytical Duties

  • Conduct ongoing analyses of process constraints.
  • Report on breakeven points across products, work centers, and facilities.
  • Analyze margins by product and division.
  • Report on periodic variances and their underlying causes.
  • Evaluate capital budgeting requests.

Qualifications:

To succeed in this role, candidates must effectively fulfill each essential duty. The following qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required:

  • Bachelor's degree from a recognized institution with a focus on accounting or business.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in Cost Accounting is essential.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles.
  • Solid background in cost systems.
  • Analytical mindset with excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Strong report-writing, communication, and IT skills.

Language Proficiency:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial documents, including statements, ledgers, and journals. Proficient in writing reports and business correspondence.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to perform calculations involving discounts, interest, commissions, and percentages. Familiarity with basic algebra and geometry, as well as statistical methods for data analysis.

Reasoning Skills:

Ability to identify problems, gather relevant data, and draw valid conclusions. Proficient in interpreting detailed technical instructions and information.

Additional Requirements:

Advanced experience with spreadsheet applications and proficient use of internet search engines. A demonstrated history of achieving results is essential.
