Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Human Resources/Academic Personnel Manager to join our team at UC San Diego. As a key member of our Undergraduate Colleges Business Office, you will play a critical role in shaping the strategic direction of our HR functions and ensuring the effective management of our academic personnel.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the preparation of the Undergraduate Colleges' strategic HR plans and actively participate in strategic staff and academic HR planning.
  • Develop, implement, and administer the overall College/UCBO HR/AP support activities and management.
  • Directly responsible for the day-to-day work direction, planning, support, and HR reporting for the Undergraduate Colleges.
  • Provide analysis and reports required to the Assistant Dean, Council of Provosts, Deans of Student Affairs, and key leadership within the Colleges to facilitate strategic planning efforts.
  • Responsible for planning and oversight for the full scope of personnel and payroll activities for 250+ career and academic staff and 750+ student employees.
  • Serve as primary Human Resource advisor for College Unit Heads, senior management, and other staff and student supervisors on human resources and personnel issues.
  • Manage a wide variety of HR issues which are often of a complex and sensitive nature.
  • Supervise, direct, and train staff responsible for coordinating and implementing the full range of staff and academic human resources functions.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated experience with employment, compensation, classification, employee/labor relations, performance management, benefits, organizational planning, and training and development.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in human resources management and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of human resources concepts, policies, and procedures, employment practices, labor relations, salary administration, training, and other areas of human resources.
  • Demonstrated experience in job analysis, classification, and compensation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with academic personnel processes related to recruitment, appointment, and salary review.
  • Successful experience in recruiting, motivating, and leading staff.
  • Strong supervisory skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise and ability to collect and analyze data, interpret policies and procedures, and apply them to routine as well as unique and complex situations.
  • Strong analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of flexibility and innovation to seek alternative solutions to unique or complex problems and issues.
  • Thorough knowledge of organizational policies and procedures.
  • Proven experience in effectively and accurately interpreting, developing, implementing, and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Proven success and ability to provide appropriate administrative and disciplinary actions to manage policy compliance.
  • Skilled in communicating clearly and effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Strong, independent decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle very difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively.
  • Demonstrated counseling techniques with ability to act as a facilitator, exercise diplomacy, tact, professionalism, responsiveness, a high degree of flexibility, and solve concerns between individuals in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Demonstrated analytical, active listening, and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of a human resources management system (HRMS), and/or other related business software programs and systems.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage a complex, multifunctional operation.
  • Extensive knowledge of performance management systems sufficient to coach supervisors and advise employees.
  • Ability to embrace and practice UCSD's Principles of Community.
  • Ability to build rapport and develop effective working relationships with individuals at various levels of the organization.
