Job Responsibilities:
  • Fabricate, install, and repair rigging and weight handling gear on vessels.
  • Securely attach hoists and pulling gear to lift, move, remove, install, or position machinery, equipment, structural parts, and heavy loads aboard ships.
  • Select and utilize appropriate chainfalls, jacks, rollers, levers, and/or pulleys based on the type of load being handled.
  • Provide clear signals to crane operators and other equipment personnel to ensure precise movement of loads.
  • Control the movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or confined spaces with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Assist in ship dry docking operations by handling lines on cleats or bollards and utilizing capstans as directed by the dock master.
  • Install or repair various rigging systems onboard ships, including masts, antenna wires, small boat handling gear, shipboard cranes, winches, windlasses, replenishment equipment, and weight handling apparatus.
  • Collaborate with tugboat operators to maneuver barges and derricks safely and efficiently.
  • Work in engine rooms, boiler rooms, aloft, or confined spaces as required, adhering to all safety protocols.
Required Skills and Knowledge:
  • Comprehensive understanding of shackles, natural, synthetic, and wire ropes, steamboat jacks, hydraulic jacks, turnbuckles, rollers, chainfalls, clamps, swivels, crane signals, shipboard nomenclature, forklifts, and aerial lifts.
  • Proficiency in splicing natural and synthetic ropes, tying knots, and operating electric, pneumatic, and hand-powered tools.
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA safety standards and regulations.
