If you seek a fulfilling career that is rich in purpose, this position may be ideal for you.

The Senior Grounds Maintenance Specialist performs advanced groundskeeping duties at a State Supported Living Center or State Hospital.

Responsibilities include enhancing the aesthetic appeal of grounds and flower beds, which encompasses mowing, weeding, fertilizing, and ensuring the effective operation of irrigation systems.

Duties also involve the removal, planting, and trimming of trees and shrubs. This role includes assigning and prioritizing tasks for other groundskeeping personnel to ensure daily and weekly objectives are met efficiently. You will serve as a team leader on groundskeeping initiatives and maintain schedules for routine tasks. Safely and effectively operating power and gas-operated equipment is essential, along with training others in its use. You will ensure that groundskeeping tools, supplies, and equipment are well-maintained and accounted for, performing minor repairs as necessary based on your training and skill level. It is crucial to keep parking lots, roads, fences, and sidewalks clear of obstructions and in good condition. You will also work to minimize the presence and impact of nuisance wildlife on the property, including snakes, rodents, and feral cats. Additional maintenance duties may be performed in collaboration with maintenance staff as needed. Other responsibilities may be assigned to ensure the overall safe operations of the facility. You may be required to work some weekends or after-hours to address situations affecting safe facility operations.

You will work under the general supervision of the Maintenance Technician Supervisor or other designated staff, with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance is required, and you may be expected to work specific shifts or, at times, a rotating schedule, extended shifts, and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policies.

You may serve in an on-call capacity on a rotating schedule to meet the operational needs of the facility.
Your duties will include performing grounds maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, fertilizing, and the removal and planting of trees and shrubs. You will ensure the safe and effective use of gas and power-operated tools to complete work efficiently, while also training other staff to use these tools according to their skill levels.

You will implement daily, weekly, and monthly work schedules for the grounds section, which includes tasks such as insect control around buildings, hedge trimming, litter management, and mowing.

You will assign, prioritize, and oversee the work of other groundskeepers to ensure all tasks are completed as required according to the established groundskeeping schedule.

You will designate mowing and weed-eating areas (zones of the campus) for other groundskeepers.
Quality assurance of work performed by other groundskeepers will be part of your responsibilities, and you will assist as necessary to ensure proper outcomes. Any significant issues will be reported to the supervisor for resolution.

You will initiate and execute beautification projects for the facility, such as designing and planting new flowerbeds, with supervisor approval.

Ensuring that irrigation systems are functioning properly will also be part of your role.

You will operate tractors equipped with implements such as front-end loaders and backhoes for various tasks, including removing tree stumps, clearing debris, moving landscaping materials, and assisting with digging in case of water line breaks.

It is essential to keep roads, parking lots, and sidewalks safe and free from debris, reporting any major issues to your supervisor.

You will assist in conducting sidewalk surveys and documenting findings as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF) to minimize slips, trips, and falls.

During inclement weather, you may be required to work beyond normal hours to clear ice and snow from sidewalks and roadways, as well as manage debris during heavy rainfall.

You will take measures to minimize the presence and impact of nuisance wildlife, including safely and humanely trapping and removing live animals, disposing of deceased animals appropriately, and proactively addressing future issues.

General maintenance, repairs, and construction work for the facility will be performed in collaboration with maintenance staff, based on your skills and abilities.

If the facility has a cemetery, you will be responsible for maintaining the grounds, setting headstones, excavating graves for funerals, and setting up casket devices and tents.

You will maintain burial logs and ensure their proper retention in a secure location with backup on the server.

Additional duties may include actively participating in or supporting the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns and/or locations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
You should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely fell and remove large trees in and around buildings and other infrastructures.

A general understanding of horticulture and landscape design is essential, along with the ability to apply this knowledge to landscape projects.

Proficiency in safely operating power equipment such as mowers, power clippers, tractors, chainsaws, backhoes, and various hand and power tools used in construction and repair is required, as well as the ability to train others in their safe use.
You must meet facility driver requirements.
Proficiency in speaking and reading English is necessary.

You should be able to read, understand, and apply a variety of interrelated instructions found in guidelines, regulations, and policies.

Basic mathematical computation skills are required.
Effective communication skills are essential.
You must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
The ability to train and lead others is important.
You should be able to stand or walk for extended periods and work in varying weather conditions.
The ability to work harmoniously and productively with co-workers and residents is essential.
You should be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
You must be able to withstand long periods of standing, bending, and walking.
Maintaining and caring for hand and power tools and equipment is necessary.
