The Senior Grounds Maintenance Specialist performs intricate senior-level landscaping tasks at a State Supported Living Center or State Hospital.

Responsibilities include enhancing the aesthetic appeal of grounds and flower beds, which involves mowing, weeding, fertilizing, and ensuring the efficient operation of irrigation systems.

Duties also encompass the removal, planting, and trimming of trees and shrubs. The role includes assigning and prioritizing tasks for other groundskeeping personnel to optimize daily and weekly operations. This position serves as a team leader on landscaping projects and maintains schedules for routine maintenance. Safely and efficiently operates power and gas-operated equipment to fulfill responsibilities and trains others in equipment usage. Ensures that landscaping tools, supplies, and equipment are well-maintained and accounted for. Performs minor repairs on equipment in line with training and skill level. Ensures that parking lots, roads, fences, and sidewalks are unobstructed and well-maintained. Reduces the presence and impact of nuisance wildlife on the premises, including snakes, rodents, and feral cats. Collaborates with maintenance staff to perform additional maintenance tasks as required. Undertakes other assigned duties to guarantee the overall safe operations of the facility. May involve working weekends or after-hours to address situations affecting safe facility operations.

Operates under the general supervision of the Maintenance Technician Supervisor or other relevant staff, exercising considerable initiative and independent judgment.


Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance is essential, with potential requirements for specific shift schedules, rotating shifts, extended hours, and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policies.

May participate in an on-call rotation as needed to meet operational demands.
Executes grounds maintenance tasks at the facility, including mowing, trimming, fertilizing, and the removal and planting of trees and shrubs. Ensures the safe and effective use of gas and power-operated tools for efficient work completion. Trains other staff in the safe operation of tools based on their skill levels.

Implements daily, weekly, and monthly work schedules within the grounds department, including insect control around buildings, hedge trimming, litter management, and mowing.

Assigns, prioritizes, and leads the work of other groundskeepers to ensure all tasks are completed as scheduled.

Designates mowing and weed-eating zones for other groundskeepers.
Oversees the quality of work performed by other groundskeepers and provides assistance as necessary to ensure satisfactory results. Reports significant issues to the supervisor for resolution.

Initiates and executes beautification projects for the facility, such as designing and planting new flower beds, with supervisor approval.

Ensures that irrigation systems are functioning properly.

Operates tractors equipped with implements like front-end loaders and backhoes for tasks such as removing tree stumps, clearing debris, moving landscaping materials, and digging for tree planting or water line repairs.

Ensures that roads, parking lots, and sidewalks are safe and free from debris, reporting any major issues to the supervisor.

Assists in conducting sidewalk surveys and documenting findings as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF) to minimize slips, trips, and falls.

Works beyond standard hours during inclement weather to clear ice and snow from walkways and roadways, as well as managing debris during heavy rainfall.

Reduces the presence and impact of nuisance wildlife, including snakes, rodents, and feral cats.

Takes appropriate actions to safely and humanely trap and remove live animals, disposes of deceased animals properly, and implements proactive measures to prevent future issues.

Performs general maintenance, repairs, and construction tasks in collaboration with maintenance staff, commensurate with skills and abilities.

If applicable, performs cemetery duties, including maintaining grounds, setting headstones, excavating graves for funerals, and setting up casket devices and tents.

Maintains burial logs and ensures secure retention of logs with backups on the server.

Additional duties may include participating in disaster response and recovery efforts or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift assignments or locations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficient knowledge and skills in safely felling and removing large trees near buildings and infrastructure.

Knowledge and skills related to minimizing the presence of nuisance wildlife such as rodents, snakes, and feral cats.

General understanding of horticulture and landscape design, with the ability to apply this knowledge to landscaping projects.

Skilled in safely operating power equipment such as mowers, power clippers, tractors, chainsaws, backhoes, and various hand and power tools used in construction and repair, with the ability to train others in safe usage.
Ability to meet facility driver requirements.
Proficient in speaking and reading English.

Ability to read, comprehend, and apply various interrelated instructions found in guidelines, regulations, and policies.

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
Effective communication skills.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to train and lead others.
Ability to stand or walk for extended periods.
Ability to work in varying weather conditions.
