The Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP) is a vital part of the City of Cambridge's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents. About the Role:

The Senior Clerk & Typist will play a key role in the Multi-Service Center (MSC), supporting staff and providing a welcoming, respectful, and professional experience for individuals and families experiencing housing instability or homelessness. As the first point of contact for many clients, the Senior Clerk & Typist must consistently offer a calm and supportive response, making a positive impact on the lives of those they serve.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Answer telephone calls in a courteous and professional manner, transferring calls to the appropriate staff member as needed.
  • Greet all visitors with a warm and welcoming smile, assisting with their requests and notifying relevant staff when clients arrive for appointments.
  • Ensure the reception areas of the Multi-Service Center are neat and attractive, reflecting the high standards of the Department.
  • Maintain accurate staff sign-in/sign-out logs and manage sign-in procedures for visitors.
  • Collect and arrange for the delivery of outgoing mail to the city hall mailroom, as well as pick up incoming mail as needed.
  • Keep the copier and fax machines well-stocked and maintained, ensuring a smooth workflow.
  • Manage office supplies, maintaining an inventory and ordering as needed.
  • Enter and search for data in the Homeless Management Information System, providing valuable insights to support the Department's mission.
  • Assist the Multi-Service Center Director with special projects, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to learn.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Multi-Service Center Director.
  • Actively participate in the Department's Race and Equity Initiative, promoting a culture of inclusivity and respect.
Minimum Requirements:
  • A minimum of three to five years' experience working with the public in a social service, customer service, reception, or related position.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to exercise mature judgment in complex situations.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills, with proficiency in personal computer skills such as Microsoft Office Suite and Excel.
  • Experience working with diverse individuals, with a strong understanding of the needs and challenges faced by the community.
  • Knowledge of Cambridge and surrounding communities is a plus.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Physical Requirements, Working Conditions, Work Flexibility, and Accommodations:

  • The ability to lift a minimum of 10 pounds.
