The Nursing Supervisor is responsible for providing both supervisory and clinical oversight of nursing operations during a designated shift. This role involves conducting rounds to ensure that the quality of care meets established standards and adheres to facility policies, as well as State, Federal, and VA regulations. The Nursing Supervisor is also tasked with responding to emergencies and overseeing nursing staff, which includes orientation, training, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions when necessary. The individual in this position will engage with the Arizona Management System (AMS) methodologies, utilizing its concepts and tools for effective problem-solving and continuous improvement in work processes. A strong emphasis on Veteran/Member-centered care is integral to this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise nursing personnel assigned to the shift.
  • Conduct timely performance evaluations.
  • Provide guidance and counseling to staff.
  • Recommend disciplinary actions as required.
  • Oversee admissions and discharges from the facility.
  • Perform rounds in Veteran/Member areas to ensure high-quality care.
  • Address all Veteran/Member concerns promptly.
  • Deliver direct care as necessary.
  • Execute complex nursing procedures when needed.
  • Offer support and consultation to nursing staff on clinical matters.
  • Ensure adherence to facility policies and regulatory standards.
  • Manage daily staff assignments to meet the needs of Veterans/Members efficiently.
  • Reassign staff or call in additional personnel as required to maintain adequate coverage.
  • Participate in the recruitment of nursing staff.
  • Conduct interviews and make hiring recommendations.
  • Orient new employees.
  • Assist in planning and delivering in-service training for the shift.
  • Contribute to the development of policies and procedures.
  • Aid in quality assurance audits.
  • Respond to emergencies with appropriate actions.
  • Communicate significant issues to the Director of Nursing Services and/or Administrator as per facility protocols.
  • Assist in investigations as necessary.
  • Manage inventory of supplies, equipment, and medications during off-hours.
  • Actively engage in AMS processes such as Huddle Boards and Problem Solving.
  • Participate in the QAPI process, which is mandated by CMS and incorporates AMS.
  • Serve on various committees.
  • Attend relevant meetings.
  • Complete special projects as assigned.
  • Assume staff duties when required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Comprehensive understanding of professional nursing principles and practices in a skilled nursing environment.
  • Knowledge of geriatric nursing theories and practices.
  • Awareness of resident conditions and evolving medical/psychological needs.
  • Familiarity with community and medical resources for quality care.
  • Proficiency in team nursing practices and treatment plan development.
  • Understanding of pharmacology and medication management.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations governing nursing practices.
  • Effective supervisory skills and staff development principles.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to analyze situations and make informed decisions.
  • Capability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Willingness to learn and implement AMS methodologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a Skilled Nursing or Long-term Care facility.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience in nursing.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Current Negative TB skin test or a physician's statement of freedom from Tuberculosis.
  • Ability to obtain and retain a fingerprint clearance card.
  • Current or temporary RN license in the State of Arizona.
  • Valid CPR certification.
