Position Overview

THOR Solutions is seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Marine Electrical Engineer to contribute to the United States Coast Guard (USCG)'s Ship Design Team. The ideal candidate will possess substantial expertise in specialized Marine Electrical domains such as electric propulsion, machinery control, and power generation or distribution systems, alongside a solid understanding of U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Analyze and assess electrical systems design blueprints, interpret specifications, and evaluate power and lighting systems, including electric or diesel-electric propulsion.
  • Draft specifications for electrical systems applicable to concept, preliminary, and contract-level designs as well as modifications to vessels.
  • Examine marine electrical systems and delineate engineering requirements.
  • Create comprehensive documentation and specifications for ships.
  • Conduct design calculations and analyses, including Electric Power Load Analysis (EPLA), Arc-Flash Analysis, Electrical System Survivability Analysis, and Ground Fault Analysis.
  • Engage in design, analysis, and evaluation of electrical circuits, power monitoring, control systems, electric propulsion, and power generation.
  • Perform performance evaluations and generate reports, drawings, or specifications concerning electrical power and generation.
  • Assess the impact of new or modified electronic systems on overall performance.
  • Review and resolve system design specifications, testing requirements, and any requests for modifications or waivers.
Work Environment:

This position is primarily office-based, involving desk and computer work, with occasional visits to shipboard environments. The role may require navigating confined spaces and utilizing ladders and hatches.

Travel Requirements:

Anticipated travel is up to 10% for ship inspections.

Eligibility Requirements:

U.S. citizenship is mandatory due to federal contract stipulations. Candidates must also be eligible for a DoD Secret security clearance, with preference given to those who already possess an active or interim clearance.

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline from an ABET-accredited institution. A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of progressive experience in Marine Electrical fields, including at least five (5) years in specialized areas such as electric propulsion, machinery control, or power systems.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding acquisition programs.
  • Familiarity with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs is preferred.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Navy Power Distribution Architecture and relevant ship design regulations.
  • Relevant certifications are advantageous, including Professional Engineer (PE) license and Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Proficiency in standard productivity software and strong communication skills.
