Job Description

We are seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the position of Battery Technology Department Head at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University.

The successful candidate will lead a team of engineers, scientists, and support staff in the development of high-performance and innovative battery technologies for various undersea vehicle and non-vehicle applications.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in battery technology, excellent leadership and communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of proposals and projects to advance our knowledge of battery-based electrical energy storage
  • Provide project updates to sponsors, present research findings at conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • Collaborate with engineers in other technical areas across ARL
  • Plan, staff, and execute programs to ensure all departmental staff and faculty are appropriately tasked
  • Recruit, retain, and define performance expectations of department staff and faculty
  • Mentor and encourage creativity in innovative technologies and research
  • Evaluate professional growth through performance reviews
  • Lead the team maintaining and improving ARL's battery testing facilities
Requirements
  • Minimally requires a Bachelor's degree in an engineering or science discipline and 5 years' related experience
  • Active government security clearance
  • Demonstrated success leading a team of engineers/scientists
  • Previous success with collaborations in a multi-disciplinary, team-oriented culture
  • Proposal and technical writing skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrating experience managing large, multi-year research efforts in a relevant area
  • Successful technical publications in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings
