Job Summary

The Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology at Penn State University is seeking a highly qualified individual to serve as the Department Head. This is a key leadership position that requires a strong academic background, excellent communication skills, and the ability to provide strategic direction to the department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide academic leadership and vision for the department, including developing and implementing strategic plans to achieve departmental goals.
  • Lead and manage the department's faculty and staff, including providing guidance and support to ensure the success of the department's research, teaching, and extension programs.
  • Develop and manage the department's budget, including allocating resources to support departmental initiatives and programs.
  • Represent the department and the university in various external settings, including conferences, meetings, and other events.
  • Collaborate with other departments and units within the university to advance the university's mission and goals.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, Environmental Microbiology, or a closely related field.
  • Strong academic background and research experience in plant pathology or a related field.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to provide strategic direction and guidance to the department.
  • Ability to manage budgets and allocate resources effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in academic leadership and management, including experience as a department head or in a similar role.
  • Strong track record of research and publication in plant pathology or a related field.
  • Experience in grant writing and securing external funding.
  • Ability to provide a diverse and inclusive environment for all faculty, staff, and students.
