St Louis, Missouri, United States Washington University in St. Louis Full time

Position Overview
The Williams Lab is in search of a dedicated postdoctoral scientist to investigate neuronal regeneration and preservation within retinal mouse models affected by injury and disease.

Project Focus
This research initiative will delve into the impact of trauma and degenerative conditions on retinal ganglion cells at the subcellular level, utilizing advanced in vivo imaging methodologies.

Key Responsibilities
The postdoctoral researcher will undertake a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Establishing an adaptive optics module to enhance the functionality of an existing 2-photon microscope for transpupillary imaging in murine models.
  • Investigating the activity of genetically encoded biosensors localized to organelles.
  • Imaging the changes in retinal axons, dendrites, and glial processes in response to neurodegenerative conditions.
  • Collecting and analyzing data, as well as preparing presentations and manuscripts.

Research Environment
The Williams Lab operates within the Washington University School of Medicine, focusing on uncovering the fundamental mechanisms behind neuronal loss. Our aim is to enhance understanding of why neurons deteriorate or axons sustain damage, ultimately leading to innovative strategies for the preservation or restoration of neural tissue.

Research Techniques
Our lab employs a variety of methodologies, emphasizing mouse models of retinal ganglion cell neurodegeneration, in vivo microscopy, AAV-mediated gene delivery, and knockout techniques, alongside transcriptomic and immunohistological analyses.

Collaboration and Development
The postdoctoral researcher will have the chance to engage with the extensive Neuroscience community at Washington University School of Medicine. Our lab has formed collaborations with experts in electrophysiology, large volume electron microscopy, and other fields to support independent research endeavors initiated by postdoctoral scholars.

Professional Growth
In addition to access to state-of-the-art research facilities, we provide career and professional development training through various university resources.

Primary Duties
The researcher will work under the guidance of a faculty mentor, managing their own project aimed at producing a first-author publication. Responsibilities include:

  • Gaining expertise in the isolation and transcriptomic analysis of retinal neurons.
  • Implementing surgical techniques for optic nerve injury and glaucoma in mice.
  • Producing and applying adeno-associated viruses.
  • Enhancing skills in writing, public speaking, networking, and critically evaluating scientific literature.
  • Presenting scientific findings within and outside the university.
  • Assisting in grant preparation and reporting.
  • Designing and evaluating research experiments.
  • Maintaining ethical standards and compliance with good laboratory practices.

Qualifications
Required: Ph.D., M.D., or an equivalent terminal degree. Preferred: Experience in adaptive optics microscopy and a proven ability to implement laboratory procedures and conduct research effectively.

Working Conditions
This role is situated in a laboratory environment, which may involve exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be capable of wearing protective equipment and providing standard care to research animals.

Benefits
Washington University in St. Louis is committed to offering a comprehensive benefits package to employees, with eligibility contingent on employment status and workload.

Diversity and Inclusion
The university values diversity and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
