Overview

As an Environmental Research Technician, your role will encompass a variety of technical responsibilities associated with both fieldwork and laboratory analysis in the domains of agronomy, wastewater management, surface water quality, and aquatic biology research initiatives. You will be tasked with sample analysis and the upkeep of equipment utilized in both environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather samples from diverse sources including wastewater, gases, soils, crops, and groundwater.
  • Execute field and laboratory investigations, compile data, and generate comprehensive reports.
  • Conduct biological and chemical assessments of various samples.
  • Support microbiological evaluations of water and wastewater.
  • Establish, maintain, and operate laboratory and field apparatus.
  • Collect samples from surface water monitoring sites and ensure the functionality of water quality monitoring devices.
  • Perform Whole Effluent Toxicity tests on aquatic species.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Carry out any other tasks as directed.

Work Environment

This position involves a combination of laboratory and field activities, which may expose you to various chemicals and biological substances. Fieldwork may also involve contact with hazardous materials and varying weather conditions. The role requires physical activities such as lifting, walking, and climbing, as well as the operation of a District vehicle.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with laboratory and field research methodologies.
  • Understanding of the operation and maintenance of laboratory and field equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols in laboratory and field settings.
  • Ability to accurately adhere to standard operating procedures.
  • Competence in conducting aquatic biological sample collection and assessments.
  • Strong mathematical skills for data analysis and tabulation.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

Mandatory Qualifications

A valid driver's license is required.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent, complemented by two years of college education in relevant scientific fields, along with a minimum of one year of experience in a scientific role involving field monitoring or laboratory work.

Substitution Policy

Additional college coursework or relevant professional experience may be considered as a substitute for the educational or experiential requirements as necessary.

Promotional Criteria

  • At least one year of prior experience in a related position within the District.
  • Civil service status in specified classifications.
