Overview

As an Environmental Research Technician, your role will encompass a variety of technical responsibilities associated with the collection of field and laboratory data in research initiatives focused on agronomy, wastewater management, surface water quality, and aquatic biology. You will be tasked with analyzing samples and ensuring the proper functioning of equipment utilized in both field and laboratory settings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gather samples from diverse sources, including wastewater, gases, soils, crops, and groundwater.
  • Conduct comprehensive field and laboratory research, compile findings, and generate detailed reports.
  • Perform biological and chemical assessments on a range of samples.
  • Assist in microbiological evaluations of water and wastewater.
  • Set up, maintain, and operate various laboratory and field apparatus.
  • Collect samples from surface water monitoring sites and manage water quality monitoring devices.
  • Execute Whole Effluent Toxicity testing on aquatic species.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Carry out any other tasks as directed.

Work Environment

This position involves a combination of laboratory and fieldwork, which may expose you to various chemicals and biological substances. Fieldwork may also involve handling hazardous materials and working under varying weather conditions. The job requires physical activities such as lifting, walking, and climbing, as well as operating a District vehicle.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with laboratory and field research methodologies.
  • Understanding of the operation and maintenance of laboratory and field equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols relevant to laboratory and field environments.
  • Ability to accurately adhere to standard operating procedures.
  • Competence in conducting aquatic biological sample collection and assessments.
  • Strong mathematical skills for data analysis and tabulation.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

Essential Qualifications

A valid driver's license is required.

Minimum Educational Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent, complemented by two years of college coursework in relevant scientific disciplines, along with a minimum of one year of experience in a scientific role involving field monitoring or laboratory tasks.

Substitution Policy

Additional college coursework or relevant professional experience may be considered as a substitute for the educational or experiential requirements as necessary.

Promotional Criteria

  • At least one year of prior experience in a related position within the District.
  • Civil service status in designated classifications.
