The XCT Facility: The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago seeks a laboratory manager for its new X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) Facility. This position offers the opportunity to join our vibrant research community at a world-renowned institution focused on collections-based natural history research in biology, anthropology, paleontology, earth, and planetary sciences.

Facility Overview: Our non-clinical XCT laboratory will feature state-of-the-art equipment, including an NSI X5000 and an NSI X25 XCT scanner, as well as an image processing facility with workstations and software for data processing, visualization, and analysis.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Equipment Maintenance: The laboratory manager will be responsible for maintaining the equipment to ensure full functionality.
  • Data Acquisition and Analysis: Conducting data acquisition and analysis for XCT users will be a key responsibility.
  • Procedure Enhancement: Enhancing procedures for tomographic data acquisition and reconstruction will be an important aspect of this role.
  • User Support: Assisting and training users in basic XCT data analysis, data acquisition, and temporary CT data storage will be a key responsibility.
  • Collaboration: Collaborating with the museum's Information Technology and scientific leadership to deliver data to users, manage user billing, and develop workflow and data management procedures will be essential.
  • Outreach and Education: Participating in the Museum's outreach and education events, as needed, will help inspire the public and the next generation of scientists.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in geological, biological, or archeological sciences, or engineering is required.
  • Experience: Two years of experience in the acquisition and/or research utilization of CT data is required.
  • Skills: Excellent written and oral communication and time-management skills are essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Education: A Master's or Ph.D. degree in geological, biological, or archeological sciences, or engineering is preferred.
  • Technical Expertise: Experience in the operation of CT instrumentation and CT data processing, and a strong computational background is preferred.
  • Professional Development: Initiative to attend selected CT conferences and workshops is preferred.
  • Research Opportunities: The option to engage in independent research and pursue independent funding is possible and negotiable.
