Position Overview

The Canine Training Specialist is tasked with ensuring brand consistency in dog training, delivering all program offerings, and upholding operational standards within the Pet Care Center. This role serves as the primary resource and leader regarding the Positive Dog Training program, accountable for achieving budgeted sales goals in dog training by driving sales and engaging all Pet Care Center partners.

As a Canine Training Specialist, adherence to the Positive Dog Training curriculum, policies, and methodologies is essential. The program emphasizes LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive), highlighting the importance of trainer skillsets and knowledge to prioritize Health & Wellness throughout the training process. A commitment to enhancing communication and teamwork between dogs and their owners is crucial, providing positive solutions and rewarding success while ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all.

  • Promote the science-based positive training philosophies of the Positive Dog Training Program while ensuring a safe training environment.
  • Maintain ethical standards in interactions with dogs, owners, and all Pet Care Center partners.
  • Confidently execute all tasks as outlined in the Dog Training Instructor Program (DTIP).
  • Develop training plans for owners and their dogs, focusing on positive reinforcement and eliminating punishment.
  • Collaborate with Pet Care Center partners to foster strong community partnerships to enhance the dog training business.
  • Exhibit excellent listening skills and effectively coach in an encouraging manner.
  • Deliver engaging presentations that capture attention and motivate others.
  • Stay informed about new products and services to engage with guests effectively.
  • Complete and maintain required training courses and acknowledgments.
  • Organize and maintain dog training schedules according to current guidelines.
  • Ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of the dog training area and equipment.
  • Advocate for the role of Canine Training Specialist within the Pet Care Center and local community.

Additional Duties

Provide prompt and courteous service to all customers by identifying their needs and sharing product knowledge and training recommendations. Adhere to established safety and loss prevention procedures.

Basic Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED is generally preferred. Successful completion of the Positive Dog Training Instructor Program upon hiring is required.

Experience in public speaking, presenting, and facilitating group activities is beneficial. Comfort with technology and the ability to assist others with troubleshooting is essential. Basic computer skills are necessary for researching information online.

Preferred Qualifications

Certifications such as CPDT-KA or Karen Pryor Academy (KPA-CTP) are preferred. Previous experience in teaching positive reinforcement dog training techniques in group settings is advantageous.

Work Environment

This position primarily involves indoor duties, although some tasks may require brief outdoor activities. The role necessitates physical activities such as bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods. The ability to lift up to 50 lbs and maneuver up to 2000 lbs with material handling equipment is required. Following safety protocols is essential to prevent injury to customers, pets, and staff.
