Position Overview

The Canine Training Specialist is tasked with ensuring the consistency of our dog training brand, delivering all program offerings, and upholding operational standards within the Pet Care Center. This role serves as the primary resource and leader in the Pet Care Center regarding Petco's Positive Dog Training program, being accountable for achieving the budgeted sales goals related to dog training by driving sales and engaging all Pet Care Center partners.

As a Canine Training Specialist, you will adhere to Petco's Positive Dog Training curricula, policies, and methodologies. The program emphasizes LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive), highlighting the importance of trainer skillsets and knowledge to prioritize Health & Wellness throughout the training process. You will be dedicated to enhancing communication and teamwork between dogs and their owners by providing positive solutions and rewarding success, all while ensuring a fun and safe environment for dogs, pet parents, and Pet Care Center partners.

Position Responsibilities

  • Promote the science-based positive training philosophies of the Petco Positive Dog Training Program while ensuring a safe training environment for all.
  • Maintain ethical standards in interactions with dogs, pet parents, and Pet Care Center partners.
  • Confidently execute all tasks outlined in the Dog Training Instructor Program (DTIP).
  • Develop individualized training plans for pet parents and their dogs, focusing on positive reinforcement and eliminating punitive measures.
  • Collaborate with Pet Care Center partners to foster strong community partnerships and grow the dog training business.
  • Exhibit excellent listening skills and effectively coach in an encouraging manner, delivering information clearly and efficiently.
  • Engage with guests regarding new products and services, showcasing their features and benefits.
  • Complete and maintain required training courses and acknowledgments as assigned.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the Dog Training area, adhering to operational guidelines.
  • Advocate for the role of Canine Training Specialist within the Pet Care Center and local community.

Other Essential Duties

Provide prompt and courteous service to all Petco guests by identifying their needs and sharing product knowledge and training recommendations. Adhere to established safety and loss prevention procedures.

Basic Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED is generally preferred. Successful completion of Petco's Positive Dog Training Instructor Program is required upon hiring.

Preferred Qualifications

Certifications such as CPDT-KA or Karen Pryor Academy (KPA-CTP) are preferred. Previous experience in teaching positive reinforcement dog training techniques in group settings is also preferred.

Work Environment

This position primarily involves indoor duties, though some tasks may require brief outdoor activities. The role necessitates physical activity, including bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods. Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and utilize material handling equipment safely.
