GENERAL FUNCTION
Under the supervision of the Wireman Foreman, this role involves executing tasks related to the construction, upkeep, and repair of substations and associated apparatus.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not include supervisory duties.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Constructs and maintains steel structures, foundations, bus systems, and switchboard transformers within substations.
- Installs and services electrical equipment essential for the operation of substations, including switchboards, relays, circuit breakers, and protective devices.
- Conducts various tests necessary for the maintenance and repair of substation operations and electrical transmission and distribution systems.
- Prepares and maintains reports and records related to maintenance, testing, and repairs as required.
- Performs substation switching and related tasks as needed.
- Sets and removes meters as necessary.
- Operates vehicles and powered equipment as required, utilizing various tools and equipment pertinent to the electrical trade.
- Works independently or collaboratively with others, providing training and guidance as assigned.
- Undertakes additional related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Understanding of substations, protective systems, and transmission and distribution networks for various customer types.
- Familiarity with tools, materials, and methods used in the electrical trade.
- Comprehension of the construction and maintenance of various electrical equipment used in transmission and distribution.
- Knowledge of electrical theory and principles related to power systems, with the ability to interpret diagrams and schematics.
- Awareness of applicable laws, codes, and safety regulations.
- Understanding of occupational hazards and safety measures relevant to this work.
- Ability to maintain physical fitness necessary for the demands of the position.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact courteously with colleagues and customers.
- Capability to handle customer inquiries and concerns effectively.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position requires work in both office and field environments, often under varying weather conditions. The individual must be capable of climbing poles and performing rescues if necessary. During emergencies, extended hours may be required. The role involves lifting up to 85 pounds and performing physical tasks such as climbing and descending into ditches. Exposure to hazardous materials may occur, and individuals with mobility restrictions may find it challenging to fulfill the essential functions of the job.
RECRUITING REQUIREMENTS
A high school diploma (or G.E.D.) along with 4 years of experience as a Journeyman Lineman is necessary. Completion of an approved Wireman Apprenticeship is required. A valid Washington State Class-A commercial driver's license, CPR certification, and first aid training are mandatory. Availability for emergency call-outs is essential.
