Canine Training Specialist

Category: Retail

Schedule: Full-time

Join a dynamic environment where creativity and collaboration drive our mission to enhance the lives of pets and their owners.

Position Overview

The Canine Training Specialist is tasked with ensuring the consistency of our dog training brand, delivering comprehensive program offerings, and upholding operational excellence within the Pet Care Center. This role serves as the primary authority and guide in the Pet Care Center regarding our Positive Dog Training initiative, responsible for achieving the center's financial targets related to dog training services through effective sales strategies and by engaging all Pet Care Center team members.

As a Canine Training Specialist, adherence to our Positive Dog Training curriculum, policies, and methodologies is essential. Our training program emphasizes LIMA principles—least intrusive, minimally aversive—highlighting the importance of the trainer's expertise to prioritize health and wellness throughout the training journey. A commitment to fostering communication and teamwork between dogs and their owners is vital, as is the ability to provide positive reinforcement and celebrate successes in a safe and enjoyable environment for all.

Key Responsibilities

To excel in this role, the individual must effectively perform the following duties:

  • Promote the science-based positive training philosophies of our program while ensuring a safe training environment for clients, guests, dogs, and team members.
  • Maintain ethical standards in all interactions with dogs, their owners, and colleagues.
  • Confidently execute all responsibilities outlined in the Dog Training Instructor Program.
  • Develop tailored training plans for clients and their dogs, focusing on positive reinforcement and minimizing punitive measures.
  • Collaborate with Pet Care Center team members to build strong community relationships that enhance the dog training business.
  • Exhibit excellent listening skills and effectively coach clients in a supportive manner.
  • Deliver engaging presentations that capture attention and motivate others.
  • Stay informed about new products and services to effectively communicate their benefits to clients.
  • Complete all required training programs and maintain ongoing professional development.
  • Organize and manage dog training schedules to meet current guidelines and expectations.
  • Ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of the training area and equipment.

Additional Duties

Provide prompt and courteous service to all clients by identifying their needs and offering knowledgeable recommendations regarding products and training services.

Adhere to established safety and loss prevention protocols.

Basic Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED is preferred. Successful completion of the Positive Dog Training Instructor Program is required upon hiring.

Experience in public speaking and group facilitation is beneficial.

Comfort with technology and the ability to assist others with troubleshooting is essential.

Basic computer skills are necessary for researching information online.

Preferred Qualifications

Certifications such as CPDT-KA or from the Karen Pryor Academy (KPA-CTP) are advantageous.

Prior experience in teaching positive reinforcement dog training techniques in group settings is preferred.

Work Environment

This position primarily involves indoor duties, although occasional tasks may require brief outdoor activity. The role necessitates physical stamina, including the ability to lift up to 50 lbs and manage heavier loads with appropriate equipment. Adherence to safety protocols is crucial to prevent injury to clients, pets, and staff.

Equal Opportunity Employer

Petco Animal Supplies, Inc. is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, or any other protected classification.
