Job Summary

The NYS Department of Motor Vehicles is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Administrative Law Judge to join our team. As a Motor Vehicle Referee, you will be responsible for conducting administrative hearings and rendering decisions on a wide range of traffic-related matters.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct administrative hearings and render decisions on traffic-related matters, including moving violations, fatal accidents, and persistent violators.
  • Review and analyze evidence, including witness statements, police reports, and other documentation.
  • Apply relevant laws and regulations, including the New York Vehicle and Traffic Law and the Commissioner's Rules and Regulations.
  • Prepare cases for review by the Motor Vehicle's Appeals Board.
  • Collaborate with other departments and agencies to ensure consistency and accuracy in decision-making.
Requirements
  • Admission to the NYS bar and two years of post-licensure professional legal experience.
  • Strong research and writing skills, with the ability to analyze complex information and present findings in a clear and concise manner.
  • Excellent oral communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with witnesses, attorneys, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong commitment to public service.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least three years' experience as a New York State Attorney.
  • Strong knowledge of New York State laws and regulations, including the Vehicle and Traffic Law and the Commissioner's Rules and Regulations.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with multiple priorities and deadlines.
