Description

A non-refundable signing bonus of $2,500 will be included in the selected applicant's first paycheck upon employment and completion of the Employment Signing and Retention Bonus Agreement.

A retention bonus of $2,500 will be issued in the selected applicant's subsequent paycheck after successfully completing 6 months of employment in the same role with the County following the signing bonus payment.

To qualify for the sign-on bonus, candidates must not have been employed as a probationary, permanent, or time-limited employee within the last 12 months under the State Human Resources Act or Warren County's Personnel Manual.

*Starting salary is $44,500*

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs intermediate protective service duties within the Sheriff's Department, which may involve personal risk; engages in related tasks as necessary. Work is conducted under the regular supervision of the Deputy Sheriff Sergeant.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Patrolling designated areas; responding to service calls; investigating incidents; undertaking special assignments; assisting the public; maintaining documentation; preparing reports.

  • Operates a patrol vehicle to monitor for legal violations, suspicious activities, or disturbances of peace during assigned shifts.
  • Responds to radio communications and addresses calls and complaints.
  • Serves legal documents, including warrants and subpoenas, and makes arrests; provides testimony in court.
  • Executes court orders and civil process papers; performs necessary follow-up tasks.
  • Engages in special assignments such as school resource officer, DARE officer, bailiff, K-9 officer, training officer, process server, community policing, etc.
  • Performs routine duties related to the operation of the county detention facility.
  • Manages traffic and crowds during emergencies and crime scenes.
  • Collaborates with other law enforcement personnel in investigations.
  • Transports individuals to various facilities across the state.
  • Assists with criminal investigations by collecting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, and managing evidence documentation for court cases.
  • Prepares a variety of detailed reports and maintains necessary files.
  • May be assigned to various administrative tasks such as purchasing and timekeeping.
  • Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of law enforcement methods, practices, and procedures; familiarity with the geography of the county and locations of significant buildings and landmarks; understanding of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff's Department; ability to comprehend and execute oral and written instructions and to create clear and concise reports; capacity to interact courteously yet firmly with the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues; capability to analyze situations and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action; proficiency in the use of firearms and operation of a motor vehicle; possession of physical agility and endurance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires medium work, involving the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Some heavy work may require the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The role involves climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is necessary for expressing or exchanging ideas verbally, and hearing is essential for receiving detailed information through oral communications. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, and observing surroundings. The worker is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, noise, and hazards. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens may occur, and specialized personal protective equipment may be required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a Basic Law Enforcement Certificate issued by the State of North Carolina. Must meet and maintain minimum qualifications for the position established by the department and the State of North Carolina. Possession of a valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina is required.
