Position Overview

Role Summary: This full-time (40 hours per week) University Safety Officer position is designed to implement effective community policing strategies at Queens University of Charlotte. In this capacity, you will foster connections through regular interactions with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and vendors. As a certified Police Officer, it is essential to possess an active BLET certification to qualify; local applicants are preferred. This role reports directly to the Chief of Police.

This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible for overtime compensation for hours worked beyond the standard schedule. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct patrols of university grounds on foot or in a vehicle to safeguard individuals and property.
  • Assist during emergencies and manage traffic flow on campus. Enforce applicable Federal, North Carolina State Laws, City Ordinances, and university regulations.
  • Carry out thorough investigations of incidents, accidents, and crimes by interviewing involved parties and collecting physical evidence, adhering to legal protocols.
  • Respond to all emergency situations, including potentially dangerous and life-threatening scenarios.
  • Offer crime prevention advice, inspect university facilities for safety risks, and assist with directions, escorts, and unlocking vehicles or doors.
  • React to fire, intrusion, and security alarms, as well as emergency call boxes.
  • Incorporate Community Policing principles into daily patrol duties and apply these concepts to resolve issues.
  • Maintain effective radio communication.
  • Prepare and submit accurate reports in a timely manner.
  • Report any security concerns or breaches.
  • Provide immediate medical assistance to injured or ill individuals in emergencies.
  • Intervene and de-escalate crisis situations using non-violent methods.
  • Document all activities and compile written reports as required by departmental guidelines.
  • Take necessary action against offenders by filing criminal charges or referring them to appropriate university authorities.
  • Offer guidance and training to new or temporary officers as needed.
  • Participate in advanced training sessions to enhance skills.
Essential Personnel Status: Campus Safety Officers are deemed essential staff at Queens. In extraordinary circumstances, the University may alter normal operations and classes. Essential personnel are required to fulfill their responsibilities, which include ensuring the continuity of critical university functions, attending to the needs of the university community, and safeguarding university assets. Notifications regarding activation will be communicated through university announcements and departmental heads, and personnel must report to work promptly or remain on duty if already present.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the coordination and oversight of special events and sporting activities.
  • Other tasks and projects may be assigned to address departmental and university needs.
Qualifications

Required Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:
  • Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification is mandatory (candidates without certification will not be considered).
  • Experience in law enforcement or security, preferably within a higher education environment.
  • Strong communication skills (both oral and written) to interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and law enforcement representatives.
  • Ability to produce detailed and accurate reports of incidents and activities.
  • Capability to make quick, informed decisions in emergency situations.
  • Extensive knowledge of contemporary policing practices.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new information.
  • Familiarity with Title IX, Clery Act, VAWA, and Campus SaVE Act.
  • Flexibility to work varying schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Pass required drug screenings and maintain a drug-free status, along with passing physical and psychological evaluations, with no criminal history.
  • Experience with report management software and access control systems is preferred.
  • Willingness to work twelve-hour rotating shifts and during emergencies or adverse weather conditions.
  • Commitment to fulfilling essential personnel duties as outlined.
  • A high school diploma is required; a Bachelor's degree is preferred or equivalent experience.
