Job Overview

The Department of Social Services (DSS) encompasses the administrative divisions of the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). HRA is committed to combating poverty and income disparity by offering essential benefits to New Yorkers in need, including Food Assistance and Emergency Rental Assistance. DHS focuses on preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City through innovative strategies that assist families and individuals in exiting shelters and achieving self-sufficiency swiftly.

Role of General Support Services

General Support Services (GSS) / Facilities Operations (FO) is seeking to fill the position of Building Custodian. This role involves:

  • Overseeing custodial personnel in various roles, including assistant building custodians, junior building custodians, and custodial aides responsible for cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Conducting inspections of the premises to ensure that cleaning and maintenance services are performed satisfactorily, noting any deficiencies and necessary repairs.
  • Supervising and participating in minor repair tasks; reporting conditions that require mechanical services.
  • Managing the requisition of fuel and the storage and issuance of janitorial supplies.
  • Coordinating the opening and closing of the facility, ensuring the security of city property.
  • Documenting work performed by external contractors.
  • Arranging and supervising the relocation of furniture.
  • Enforcing safety regulations within the building.
  • Preparing, maintaining, and submitting reports on custodial activities, incidents, accidents, and unusual occurrences.
  • Training staff and organizing training sessions.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in building cleaning and maintenance.
  • For Assignment Level II, three years of relevant experience is required.
  • For Assignment Levels III and IV, four years of relevant experience is necessary.
