Position Overview

Under the supervision of the TRIO programs director, the Deputy Director is tasked with supporting the management, execution, and sustainability of three federally funded Upward Bound initiatives. These specialized programs are focused on motivating and equipping income-eligible, potential first-generation college attendees, as well as students identified as academically at-risk, to pursue higher education.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the daily functions of the three Upward Bound initiatives.
  • Ensure effective recruitment, retention, and engagement of participants across all targeted educational institutions, meeting federal requirements that two-thirds of participants are income-eligible and first-generation college students.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of services and student progress in compliance with federal guidelines and organizational policies.
  • Coordinate the planning and execution of both Academic and Summer Components.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate the staff involved in the Upward Bound programs.
  • Foster strong partnerships with staff at target schools to guarantee seamless program delivery.
  • Manage a caseload of participants that may fluctuate based on additional responsibilities.

This role will require occasional travel to educational institutions to ensure effective program implementation and staff oversight. There may be weekend, evening, and travel obligations, particularly during the summer months.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in education, social work, or a related field.
  • Relevant experience in a federal TRIO program or similar initiatives aimed at serving underserved or at-risk student populations.
  • Experience in providing both group and individual support to help students navigate social, cultural, and academic challenges related to postsecondary education.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the college admissions and financial aid processes.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience in supervisory roles and performance management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with the U.S. Department of Education and federal TRIO Programs.
  • Experience working with students in foster care and those facing homelessness or housing instability.
  • Previous involvement with an Upward Bound project.
  • Demonstrated experience in grant writing and securing funding from local, state, or federal sources.

Compensation:

Salary commensurate with experience, with a maximum budget of $73,000.
