Your Contributions

As a vital member of the Comparative Medicine team, you will enhance our veterinary medicine efforts by providing exceptional clinical care across our animal facilities.

Your role will involve regular collaboration with colleagues to meet key regulatory obligations in accordance with local laws and AAALAC International standards. You will delegate certain veterinary care tasks to the veterinary technical staff while offering guidance on minor treatments and interventions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver high-quality veterinary care to a variety of research animal species, supporting Pfizer's diverse portfolio. Execute tasks assigned by the Attending Veterinarian (AV) across all facilities, providing veterinary oversight to technician staff in the animal facilities. Ensure compliance with AV responsibilities as outlined in local regulations and guidelines.
  • Evaluate or consult on research animal proposals for IACUC review. Participate in a rotational schedule to provide veterinary care coverage during weekends and holidays.
  • Maintain essential sections of the animal care program, including SOPs and training documents, to ensure operational quality and regulatory adherence.
  • Engage with in vivo scientists to comprehend their research requirements, fostering a flexible and constructive dialogue to address ethical review matters, emphasizing the 3Rs, humane endpoints, and adverse effects. Contribute insights to CM research initiatives aligned with Pfizer's portfolio.
  • Educate colleagues in CM and other Research and Development areas on techniques and principles that promote the 3Rs, particularly in anesthesia and analgesia, as documented in literature and shared at external conferences.
  • Assist the AV in maintaining compliance and providing guidance on regulatory animal health issues, such as the import/export of animals and related products.
  • Support internal audits and inspections, and occasionally assist in evaluating third-party facility inspections and audits as a CM expert.
  • Consult on the development of animal models to support researchers as needed. Aid in assessing new equipment to enhance the execution of technical projects.
  • Actively engage in or lead CM teams.
May be required to operate under one of the following:
  • The United States Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act and associated Regulations and Standards, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Good Laboratory Practices, Public Health Service Policy, and/or AAALAC accreditation standards.
Qualifications

Must-Have
  • DVM/VMD; licensed to practice in the US required
  • Minimum 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience in laboratory animal medicine with proven expertise in regulatory compliance, preventive healthcare, clinical care, and anesthesia/analgesia required.
Nice-to-Have
  • Board certification by ACLAM or other relevant US certification preferred
  • Experience with nonhuman primates, including behavioral management
Physical/Mental Requirements
  • If working at a site with nonhuman primates, you must either provide proof of measles immunity or receive the measles vaccination prior to employment.
Non-Standard Work Schedule, Travel or Environment Requirements
  • This role is classified as essential personnel.
  • Essential personnel are those required to report to their designated work location to ensure the continuity of critical functions during emergencies or operational suspensions as determined by Pfizer.
Relocation support may be available based on business needs and/or eligibility.
