Your Impact
As a member of the Comparative Medicine team, you will provide exceptional clinical veterinary services across our animal facilities. You will regularly collaborate with colleagues to meet key regulatory obligations in accordance with local laws and AAALAC International standards. Certain aspects of veterinary care and animal behavior will be delegated to technical staff under your guidance, ensuring high standards of care and compliance. Your dedication and innovative approach will be instrumental in helping Pfizer reach new achievements and improve patient outcomes worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality veterinary care to a variety of research animal species in alignment with Pfizer's objectives.
- Execute tasks assigned by the Attending Veterinarian (AV) across all facilities, providing veterinary oversight to technicians and behavior staff.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with AV responsibilities as dictated by local regulations and guidelines.
- Participate in a rotational schedule to offer veterinary care coverage during weekends and holidays.
- Review and provide input on research animal proposals for IACUC assessment.
- Maintain essential documentation related to the animal care program, standard operating procedures, and training materials to ensure operational quality and regulatory adherence.
- Engage with in vivo scientists to comprehend their research requirements, addressing ethical review matters with a focus on the principles of the 3Rs, humane endpoints, and adverse effects.
- Contribute to CM research initiatives that support Pfizer's portfolio.
- Educate colleagues in CM and other R&D areas on techniques that promote the 3Rs, particularly in anesthesia and analgesia.
- Assist the AV in maintaining compliance and providing guidance on regulatory animal health issues, including the import/export of animals and related products.
- Support internal audits and inspections, and occasionally assist in evaluating third-party facility inspections as a CM expert.
- Consult on the development of animal models to aid researchers as needed and evaluate new equipment for technical project execution.
- Actively engage in or lead CM teams.
- May be required to operate under various regulations, including the USDA Animal Welfare Act and associated standards.
Essential
- DVM with a minimum of 2 years of experience; must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the US.
- Board certification by ACLAM or equivalent required.
- Experience in laboratory animal medicine with a proven track record of increasing responsibilities.
- Thorough understanding of regulations and guidelines (e.g., USDA, GLP) and AAALAC accreditation standards related to animal use in research.
- Experience in nonhuman primate medicine and behavior management.
- Familiarity with GLP practices.
- Experience conducting ophthalmic examinations in a preclinical context.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including the ability to influence peers, mentor others, and guide team efforts to achieve impactful outcomes.
- If working at a site with nonhuman primates, proof of measles immunity or vaccination will be required prior to employment.
- This role is classified as essential personnel, required to report to work during emergencies or operational suspensions.
