Your Contributions
As a vital member of the Comparative Medicine team, you will enhance the quality of clinical veterinary practices across our animal facilities. You will collaborate closely with colleagues to meet key regulatory obligations in accordance with local laws and AAALAC International standards. Certain veterinary care and behavioral assessments will be delegated to technical staff, with your guidance on minor treatments and interventions. Your dedication, innovative thinking, and focus will be crucial in propelling Pfizer towards new achievements that benefit patients worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver exceptional veterinary care to a variety of research animal species in alignment with Pfizer's objectives.
- Execute tasks assigned by the Attending Veterinarian (AV) across all facilities, providing direction to veterinary technicians and behavioral staff.
- Ensure ongoing compliance by fulfilling AV responsibilities as outlined in local regulations and guidelines.
- Participate in a rotational schedule to provide veterinary care coverage during weekends and holidays.
- Review and consult on research animal proposals submitted for IACUC evaluation.
- Maintain relevant sections of the animal care program, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and training documents to ensure operational quality and regulatory adherence.
- Engage with in vivo scientists to comprehend their research requirements, fostering a flexible and constructive dialogue regarding ethical review, focusing on the principles of the 3Rs, humane endpoints, and adverse effects.
- Contribute insights to CM research initiatives supporting Pfizer's portfolio.
- Educate colleagues in CM and other R&D divisions on techniques and principles that promote the 3Rs, particularly in anesthesia and analgesia.
- Assist the AV in maintaining compliance and advising on regulatory animal health issues, such as the import/export of animals and by-products.
- Support internal audits and inspections, occasionally assisting with evaluations of third-party facility inspections as a CM expert.
- Consult on the development of animal models to aid researchers as needed and assist in assessing new equipment for technical project execution.
- Actively engage in or lead CM teams.
- May be required to operate under regulations such as the USDA Animal Welfare Act, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Good Laboratory Practices, Public Health Service Policy, and/or AAALAC accreditation standards.
Essential
- DVM with a minimum of 2 years of experience; must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the US.
- Board certification by ACLAM or equivalent certification required.
- Experience in laboratory animal medicine with a proven track record of increasing responsibilities and achievements.
- Thorough understanding of regulations and guidelines (e.g., USDA, GLP) and AAALAC accreditation standards related to animal use in research, education, and testing.
- Experience in nonhuman primate medicine and behavior management.
- Familiarity with GLP.
- Experience conducting ophthalmic examinations in a preclinical environment.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, mentor others, and guide colleagues towards impactful outcomes.
- If working at a site with nonhuman primates, proof of measles immunity or vaccination is required prior to employment.
- This role is classified as essential personnel, meaning you will be required to report to your designated work location during emergencies or operational suspensions.
