Job Overview
This role is based at the San Luis Obispo Campus, operating on a schedule from Monday to Friday, 5:00 pm to 1:30 am. A 7.5% shift differential stipend is available for this position.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general guidance of the Supervisor of Custodial Services, the Lead Custodian is responsible for planning, assigning, overseeing, and scheduling the tasks of custodial personnel. This role also includes direct involvement in cleaning and maintenance activities across various facilities, including offices and classrooms, while performing additional related responsibilities as needed.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Lead Custodian role is characterized by the responsibility to supervise and organize the work of custodial staff and student workers, as well as to suggest enhancements or modifications to existing practices. Those assigned to a College Center will work with minimal oversight and must exercise independent judgment.
In this position, you will contribute to institutional effectiveness and foster student learning by ensuring that facilities are maintained in a clean and safe condition.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
District-wide Responsibilities:
- Supervise and schedule custodial staff activities;
- Develop cleaning schedules aligned with classroom usage and special events;
- Organize special custodial schedules during academic breaks;
- Provide recommendations for improvements to the Supervisor of Custodial Services;
- Train and guide custodial staff in their duties;
- Instruct on the safe handling and mixing of cleaning chemicals;
- Review completed work for adherence to established standards;
- Address special requests and assign tasks accordingly;
- Initiate training programs and demonstrations;
- Provide feedback on custodial staff performance;
- Perform various custodial tasks, including cleaning and sanitizing facilities;
- Operate custodial equipment and maintain cleanliness of work areas;
- Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students regarding custodial services;
- Manage inventory of custodial supplies and equipment;
- Maintain safety and health standards in all operations;
- Drive a District vehicle for supply pickups;
- Establish positive working relationships with all stakeholders;
- Perform additional related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Associate degree;
- Training in hazardous materials and chemicals.
Required
- Three years of experience in custodial work.
- Experience in a supervisory role.
- Familiarity with modern cleaning techniques and equipment;
- Understanding of requirements for maintaining facilities in a sanitary condition;
- Knowledge of inventory management for supplies;
- Awareness of hazardous materials and safety protocols;
- Proficiency in relevant computer applications;
- Principles of effective supervision;
- Strong command of English grammar and usage.
- Able to lift and carry heavy items;
- Visual acuity for reading and understanding regulations;
- Ability to communicate effectively in person and via phone;
- Capacity to stand or sit for extended periods;
- Manual dexterity for operating office equipment.
