Position Overview
The Senior Custodial Supervisor operates under the direct oversight of the Assistant Director for Custodial Operations and the general supervision of the Associate Director for Facilities Operations. This role is pivotal in leading, mentoring, and training a dedicated team of custodians in the effective use of cleaning equipment, materials, and established custodial practices. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and aesthetic standards across various designated work areas, which may include residential facilities and administrative offices.
Primary Responsibilities
- Oversee the management of waste disposal and recycling initiatives within residential facilities.
- Deliver daily custodial services during peak seasons to ensure efficient facility readiness.
- Ensure the upkeep and cleanliness of assigned residential areas.
- Utilize motorized cleaning equipment proficiently.
- Execute general housekeeping tasks.
- Maintain cleanliness in shared restroom facilities.
- Provide comprehensive training on equipment usage, supplies, and accepted custodial methodologies.
- Coordinate the key elements of the recycling and waste management program.
- Assign, evaluate, and inspect the work of custodial staff, including completing inspection documentation.
- Assist in tracking employee attendance and contribute to performance evaluations.
- Plan and organize personnel and work assignments through both manual and digital methods.
- Employ computer systems for communication, research, documentation, and report generation.
- Guide and mentor custodial staff in their responsibilities and best practices.
- Respond to on-call emergencies as required.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Proven ability to lead and train a team effectively.
- In-depth knowledge of custodial methods, materials, and safety protocols.
- Experience in assessing and implementing appropriate custodial practices.
- Proficient in operating various custodial equipment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Capability to navigate different building types, including low-rise and high-rise residential facilities.
- Physical ability to lift and transport heavy items and work in diverse environments.
- Competence in using computers for extended periods for various tasks.
- Flexibility to work alternative schedules, including weekends and holidays.
Required Experience
- 1-2 years of relevant custodial experience, including leadership and training roles.
- Possession of a valid driver's license for operating necessary vehicles and equipment.
Preferred Experience
- 3 years of experience in custodial services or supervisory roles.
- Experience in training and mentoring staff.
- Background in a university or residential setting.
- Familiarity with custodial cleaning technologies.
- Basic computer proficiency.
Compensation
Classification: Senior Custodial Supervisor
Anticipated Salary Range: $3,500/month - $4,072/month
Salary Range: $3,347/month - $5,498/month
San Jose State University provides a comprehensive benefits package that typically amounts to 30-35% of the base salary.
