Position: Small Animal Care Technician

-Essential Qualifications: Minimum of 1 year experience in small animal care (preferably in a research environment) along with a relevant degree or certification such as LVT or equivalent.

The Small Animal Care Technician plays a crucial role within the animal operations team, ensuring a high standard of care in the execution of the animal research program. This role involves assisting with the daily care of various small animal species and will report directly to the Small Animal Care Manager. This is a temporary position with the possibility of extension or transition to a full-time role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Shift Management: The animal care team is responsible for providing consistent coverage for small animal needs throughout the year. This includes scheduled weekend shifts with compensatory time off during the week, as well as equitable holiday coverage.
  • Animal Handling & Welfare: Safely handle animals to minimize stress, implement species-specific care programs, and prepare tailored diets based on individual nutritional requirements. Provide preventative and emergency care under veterinary supervision.
  • Reproductive Oversight: Engage in studies to enhance understanding of reproductive processes across species, managing breeding, gestation, and weaning.
  • Research Participation: Contribute to research initiatives by assisting in data collection and sample acquisition.
  • Support for Procedures: Aid in the execution of planned procedures, providing monitoring and supportive care, with opportunities to assist in anesthetic and surgical interventions.
  • Population Management: Maintain accurate records of animal populations and manage data using colony management software.
  • Biosecurity Measures: Adhere to standard operating procedures to ensure biosecurity and assist in routine biosurveillance testing.
  • Record Maintenance: Keep comprehensive medical records and collaborate with veterinarians and team members on case reviews, providing necessary medical interventions.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to all IACUC protocols and assist in preparations for inspections.
  • Inventory Management: Track the receipt and usage of medications and supplies, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Medical Assistance: Offer perioperative support and pain management for all procedures.
  • Training and Compliance: Participate in required health and safety training, ensuring compliance with occupational health standards.

Required Skills and Competencies:

Experience:

  • At least 1 year of hands-on experience in animal care within a research or clinical setting.

Preferred Education/Certifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited Veterinary Technical program and successful completion of the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) or equivalent.
  • Current licensure in good standing or eligibility for licensure in the relevant state.
