Senior Animal Care Specialist, Animal Resource Center

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Animal Care Specialist to join our team at the Animal Resource Center. As a key member of our animal care team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional care and husbandry to our research animals.
Key Responsibilities- Animal Husbandry: Provide daily care and husbandry to animals in quarantine, isolation, biohazard, or barrier-sustained areas.
- Animal Handling: Receive, identify, and house selected animal species, and maintain related records.
- Restraint and Handling: Assist with restraint, handling, and manipulation of various animal species as assigned by the on-site Supervisor.
- Inventory Management: Receive, inspect, and put away incoming animals, and ensure and provide for sentinel animals in each rodent housing area.
- Diet Preparation: Prepare special diets in accordance with principal investigators' protocols, and ensure special diets are provided to correct animals.
- Training and Mentorship: Participate in providing on-the-job training and mentorship of lower-level personnel.
- Medication Administration: Administer commonly used and easily administered treatments or medications as directed by veterinary staff.
- Record Keeping: Maintain computer databases and accurate departmental animal housing or support area record keeping.
- Monitoring and Surveillance: Assist in specialized monitoring and surveillance programs.
- Animal Health Observations: Monitor daily animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations, animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals.
- Supply Management: Order, receive, and distribute feed, bedding, and general supplies, and maintain related records.
- Personal Protective Equipment: Comply with and wear required personal protective equipment.
- Equipment Operation: Operate equipment and use supplies according to safety guidelines.
- Housekeeping: Perform general housekeeping and adhere to safety procedures.
- Cleaning and Sanitizing: Sanitize facilities, animal housing units, and ancillary animal care equipment.
- Problem Reporting: Observe and report problems involving animal care equipment and environmental support systems.
- Attendance and Scheduling: Maintain required attendance level and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that assigned duties are completed.
- Supervision: May provide working supervision to one or several Animal Technicians.
- Task Flexibility: Perform tasks of Animal Care Attendant and Animal Technician as needed.
- Program Support: May assist in maintenance of breeding programs.
- Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.
