Position Overview

The ALSO Legal Outreach, Information, and Assistance (LOIA) Project is committed to advocating for clients by providing options, legal support, and representation to achieve their objectives. Our unwavering dedication to justice and equity, particularly regarding race and gender, drives our mission. The Senior Legal Advocate will oversee the provision of legal services to individuals affected by domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking, ensuring they receive the necessary legal guidance and representation. Funded by a grant from the Office on Violence Against Women, the Senior Legal Advocate will collaborate with the LOIA Project to deliver essential legal support to the communities served by ALSO. This role involves working as part of a comprehensive organizational team, partnering with various departments including Safe Streets, Safe Homes, Policy, People & Culture, Fiscal, and Administration to fulfill ALSO's vision and objectives. Occasional travel may be required.

Required Qualifications

  • Must hold a valid license to practice law in Illinois.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in client representation, with at least 2 years focused on cases involving survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking.
  • Proven knowledge of legal matters and available resources for survivors in these areas, complemented by specialized training.
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly to new information, methodologies, systems, and processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with VAWA confidentiality regulations and client communication protocols.
  • Bilingual candidates, particularly in Spanish and English, are highly desirable.
  • Experience engaging with underserved communities.
  • Background in project development, implementation, and coordination.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Understanding of issues related to gender-based violence, advocacy principles, and relevant legal and policy matters.
  • Strong knowledge of the communities within ALSO's service areas.
  • Experience in a governmental or nonprofit setting.
  • Involvement in social justice, violence prevention, or anti-oppression initiatives, with a solid understanding of the unique needs of underserved populations.
  • A genuine commitment to working closely with survivors of domestic and dating violence.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to provide timely and thoughtful responses to inquiries from both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
  • Creativity, initiative, and adaptability.
  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively with diverse teams, consultants, partners, and community members.
  • Strong listening and analytical skills.
