Position Overview

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Nuclear Fusion Research Specialist to join our Nuclear Science & Technology team. This role is part of a dynamic group that operates on a 4x10 schedule, allowing for every Friday off. The selected candidate will engage in both experimental and analytical tasks that support the Fusion Safety Program. The experimental work will encompass various activities at the Safety and Tritium Applied Research (STAR) facility, particularly focusing on the behavior of tritium in materials, including aspects such as permeation, retention, and desorption.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and development initiatives that push the boundaries of current knowledge and contribute to multiple ongoing programs.
  • Participate in the planning and review of research projects, providing valuable input during project meetings.
  • Assist in the design, assembly, and operation of specialized laboratory experiments tailored to our research needs.
  • Support the operation and analysis of results derived from fusion safety computational tools.
  • Adhere to environmental, health, and safety standards, ensuring all work is performed in a compliant and safe manner.
  • Contribute to the scientific community by publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals and engaging in relevant conferences.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Level 2: Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
  • Level 3: Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field, plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Practical experience with ultra-high vacuum systems, gas analysis, and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with the design and assembly of vacuum and gas systems, as well as data acquisition and control mechanisms.
  • Experience with hydrogen interactions in materials.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with irradiated materials and in radiological environments.
  • Knowledge of thermal desorption spectroscopy techniques.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • The salary range for this position is: Level 2 - minimum $75,804 - maximum $155,496 / Level 3 - minimum $91,008 - maximum $186,588. Compensation is determined based on education, relevant experience, and other qualifications.
