Role Summary

The Managing Attorney for the Eviction Defense Program will be responsible for overseeing the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation's (AVLF) esteemed tenant rights initiatives, including the eviction defense services. This role encompasses managing the general eviction defense operations and the specialized "Access to Counsel" initiative in collaboration with the City of Atlanta. The Managing Attorney will partner closely with the Co-Director of Safe and Stable Homes to enhance AVLF's strategic litigation and advocacy efforts. These initiatives are vital for supporting Atlanta residents confronting eviction and displacement challenges.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and manage the activities of at least 4 team members, ensuring quality control, providing mentorship, receiving feedback, delegating tasks, and offering support.
  • Evaluate the ongoing performance and effectiveness of AVLF's eviction defense programs, implementing enhancements to meet community needs.
  • Act as the primary liaison between AVLF and the City of Atlanta regarding the Access to Counsel initiative.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with law firms, volunteers, and community partners, while actively participating in relevant organizations or coalitions.
  • Manage formal partnerships related to eviction defense work, including memorandums of understanding and collaborative events, while maintaining high-level communication with community stakeholders.
  • Coordinate the involvement of eviction defense teams in grant applications, reporting, and compliance activities.
  • Ensure that eviction defense teams remain informed about legal and professional developments through seminars, training, and ongoing professional growth.
  • Support the execution of AVLF's strategic plan and the overall impact of Safe and Stable Homes programming.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited institution and an active member of the State Bar of Georgia in good standing; 5 to 7 years of combined experience in landlord-tenant law litigation and supervisory roles, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
  • Proven experience advocating for tenants in disputes with landlords, particularly in eviction scenarios.
  • Experience working with clients from diverse racial, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising attorneys, law students, and other personnel.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly to a broad audience, addressing the needs of clients and volunteers.
  • Respectful and responsive to the cultural beliefs and practices of clients' communities.
  • Strong collaborative abilities and a knack for developing innovative solutions.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to excellence in execution.
  • Organized with the capacity to prioritize client needs effectively.
  • Proven excellence in legal research and writing.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite; familiarity with Salesforce is advantageous.
Compensation and Benefits

Salary: $85,000 - $90,000
