Role Summary

The Managing Attorney for the Eviction Defense Program plays a pivotal role in overseeing the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation's (AVLF) esteemed tenant rights initiatives. This position is responsible for managing both general eviction defense efforts and the specialized "Access to Counsel" collaboration with the City of Atlanta. The Managing Attorney will collaborate closely with the Co-Director of Safe and Stable Homes to enhance AVLF's strategic litigation and advocacy strategies. These essential programs deliver vital support to residents of Atlanta who are at risk of eviction and displacement.

Success in this role demands the ability to lead a diverse team of professionals while engaging effectively with individuals seeking assistance, volunteers, colleagues, community partners, policymakers, and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and manage the activities of at least 4 team members, ensuring quality control, providing training, soliciting feedback, delegating tasks, and offering support.
  • Evaluate the ongoing performance and effectiveness of AVLF's eviction defense initiatives, implementing enhancements to meet community needs.
  • Act as the primary liaison between AVLF and the City of Atlanta regarding the Access to Counsel initiative.
  • Foster relationships with law firms, volunteers, and community partners, while actively participating in relevant organizations or coalitions.
  • Manage formal partnerships related to eviction defense work, including memorandums of understanding and collaborative events, while engaging in high-level communications with community stakeholders.
  • Coordinate the involvement of eviction defense teams in grant applications, reporting, and compliance efforts.
  • Ensure that eviction defense teams remain informed about legal and professional developments by attending seminars, training sessions, and other professional development opportunities.
  • Assist in executing AVLF's strategic plan and enhancing the strategic impact of Safe and Stable Homes programming.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited institution and active membership in the State Bar of Georgia in good standing; 5 to 7 years of combined experience in landlord-tenant law litigation and supervisory roles, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
  • Proven experience advocating for tenants in disputes with landlords, particularly in eviction cases.
  • Experience working with clients from diverse racial, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising attorneys, law students, and other staff members.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey information to a wide range of individuals, addressing the needs of clients and volunteers.
  • Respectful and responsive to the cultural beliefs and practices of clients.
  • Strong collaborative abilities and a knack for developing creative solutions.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to excellence in execution.
  • Highly organized with the ability to prioritize client needs effectively.
  • Proven excellence in legal research and writing.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite; experience with Salesforce is advantageous.

Compensation: $85,000 - $90,000
