Position Overview
The Managing Attorney for the Eviction Defense Program will report to the Co-Director of the Safe and Stable Homes Program at the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (AVLF). This role involves overseeing AVLF's acclaimed tenant rights initiatives, particularly focusing on eviction defense efforts. The program encompasses both general eviction defense and specialized "Access to Counsel" initiatives in collaboration with the City of Atlanta.
In partnership with the Co-Director, the Managing Attorney will further refine AVLF's strategic litigation and advocacy efforts. These programs are essential for assisting Atlanta residents confronting eviction and displacement. Success in this position requires leading a diverse group of professionals to engage effectively with clients, volunteers, colleagues, partners, policymakers, and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
- Overseeing and guiding the work of at least 4 team members, ensuring quality control, mentorship, feedback incorporation, delegation, and support.
- Evaluating the performance and effectiveness of AVLF's eviction defense initiatives and implementing enhancements to address community needs.
- Acting as the primary liaison between AVLF and the City of Atlanta regarding the Access to Counsel initiative.
- Cultivating relationships with law firms, volunteers, and community partners, while actively participating in relevant organizations or coalitions.
- Managing formal partnerships related to eviction defense work, including memorandums of understanding and collaborative events, while engaging in high-level communications with community stakeholders.
- Coordinating the involvement of eviction defense teams in grant proposals, reporting, and compliance efforts.
- Ensuring that eviction defense teams remain informed about legal and professional developments through participation in seminars, training, and ongoing professional growth.
- Supporting the execution of AVLF's strategic plan and enhancing the strategic impact of Safe and Stable Homes programming.
Qualifications and Skills
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited institution and active membership in the State Bar of Georgia in good standing; 5 to 7 years of combined experience in landlord-tenant law litigation and management, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
- Proven experience advocating for tenants in disputes with landlords, particularly in eviction scenarios.
- Experience working with clients from diverse racial, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Demonstrated experience supervising attorneys, law students, and other personnel.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to convey and support the needs of clients and volunteers effectively.
- Respectful and responsive to the cultural beliefs and practices of clients' communities.
- Strong collaborative abilities.
- Capacity to develop innovative solutions.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to excellence in execution.
- Highly organized with the ability to prioritize client needs effectively.
- Proven excellence in legal research and writing.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite; experience with Salesforce is advantageous.
Salary: $85,000 - $90,000
