Position Overview

Under the guidance of the Co-Director of the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation's (AVLF) Safe and Stable Homes Program, the Managing Attorney for the Eviction Defense Program will oversee AVLF's acclaimed tenant rights initiatives and teams, including eviction defense efforts. This program encompasses both general eviction defense services and the specialized "Access to Counsel" collaboration with the City of Atlanta.

The Managing Attorney will collaborate closely with the Co-Director of Safe and Stable Homes to enhance AVLF's strategic litigation and advocacy framework. These initiatives are vital for Atlanta residents confronting eviction and displacement challenges. Success in this role necessitates leading a diverse group of professionals to engage effectively with individuals seeking assistance, volunteers, colleagues, partners, policymakers, and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Overseeing and managing the performance of at least 4 staff members, ensuring quality control, providing training, receiving feedback, delegating tasks, and offering support.
  • Evaluating the ongoing effectiveness and impact of AVLF's eviction defense programs and implementing enhancements to address community needs.
  • Acting as the primary liaison between AVLF and the City of Atlanta regarding all matters related to the City's Access to Counsel initiative.
  • Fostering relationships with law firms, volunteers, and community partners, while actively participating in relevant organizations or coalitions.
  • Managing formal partnerships related to AVLF's eviction defense efforts (e.g., MOUs, joint events) and engaging in high-level communications with pertinent community stakeholders.
  • Coordinating the eviction defense teams' involvement in grant applications, reporting, and compliance activities.
  • Ensuring that eviction defense teams remain informed about legal and professional developments through seminars, training, and ongoing professional growth.
  • Assisting in the execution of AVLF's strategic plan and enhancing the strategic impact of Safe and Stable Homes programming.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited institution and an active member of the State Bar of Georgia in good standing; 5 to 7 years of combined experience in landlord-tenant law litigation and management, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
  • Proven experience advocating for tenants in disputes with landlords, particularly in eviction scenarios.
  • Experience working with clients from diverse racial, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising attorneys, law students, and other staff members.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey information to a wide range of individuals and support the needs of clients and volunteers.
  • Respectful and responsive to cultural beliefs and practices within clients' communities.
  • Strong collaborative abilities and capacity to develop creative solutions.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to excellence in execution.
  • Organized with the ability to prioritize effectively based on clients' needs.
  • Proven excellence in legal research and writing.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite; experience with Salesforce is advantageous.

Salary: $85,000 - $90,000
