A Senior Civil Engineer will oversee and execute civil engineering responsibilities on diverse building design initiatives, ranging from small-scale to extensive projects, including those focused solely on civil engineering.

Key Responsibilities encompass but are not limited to:

  • Leading civil engineering tasks as a principal project engineer, which includes analysis and design related to utilities, roadways, site grading, stormwater management, erosion control, and site plan development; collaborating with other design teams; managing the creation of contract documents; and ensuring adherence to project budgets and timelines.
  • Collaborating within a multi-disciplinary design team.
  • Engaging with clients to define and confirm project scope.
  • Creating marketing and presentation materials as required.
  • Seeking guidance from Senior Engineers and Department Heads to address technical and coordination challenges.
  • Supervising and mentoring Civil II/III engineers, CAD Technicians, and other project staff, especially when facing complex issues.
  • Conducting civil services related to the bidding process, including preparing addenda and amendments, and managing bid openings and tabulations.
  • Executing civil services during the construction phase, such as site visits, responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and generating record drawings.
  • Adhering to the organization's quality control protocols and procedures.
  • Interacting with and taking direction from senior personnel.
  • Participating in team meetings and coordinating efforts with colleagues.
  • Guiding and monitoring the professional growth of junior civil staff.

Project Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Carrying out tasks as assigned by senior staff.
  • Drafting scope and fee proposals for the civil components of multi-disciplinary or standalone civil projects.
  • Conducting project code analysis for review by the Senior Engineer.
  • Producing accurate, comprehensive, and code-compliant civil drawings and specifications for schematic, design development, and construction document submissions.
  • Reviewing calculations and all outputs generated by Civil II/III engineers and technicians assigned to the project, particularly focusing on analysis and design assumptions, input data, and output results.
  • Coordinating drawings with technical specifications.
  • Aligning work products with other disciplines.
  • Incorporating responses to quality control comments into project documents.
  • Assisting in addressing RFIs, Dr. Check comments, etc.
  • Reviewing and responding to construction administration submittals.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Graduation from an ABET-accredited engineering program in one of the following fields:
    • Civil Engineering
    • Civil and Environmental Engineering
    • Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering
    • Civil Engineering Technology
  • A post-graduate degree in Civil Engineering or a related field may be considered favorably.
  • Must hold a professional engineering license in at least one US state, preferably in the local jurisdiction.
  • A Senior Civil Engineer typically possesses 4-6 years of substantial design and practical experience in a leadership capacity within a civil engineering firm or a multi-disciplinary architectural and engineering firm. Experience in utilities, roadways, site grading, stormwater management, erosion control, and site plan preparation is advantageous.
  • Possession of an NCEES record to facilitate licensure through reciprocity is preferred.
  • Familiarity with sustainable design principles and practices, along with LEED AP accreditation, is preferred.
  • Additional certifications such as CFM, CDT, CCS, or CCCA are encouraged to demonstrate personal growth and an expanding knowledge base in the profession.
  • Active involvement in NSPE, ASCE, or other relevant professional organizations is desirable.
  • A Senior Civil Engineer should be proficient in utilizing current company software for word processing, email, accounting, and information management. Current software includes:
    • AutoCAD Civil 3D
    • PCSWMM
    • Pondpack
    • SewerGems
    • Water Gems
    • Microsoft Teams
    • Word
    • Excel
  • Experience as a lead designer or civil engineer on federal, state, municipal, healthcare, commercial, higher education, or similar projects, along with experience in Design/Build and CM at Risk project delivery methods, is desirable.

Physical Requirements

This role is primarily sedentary and typically performed in an office environment. The workspace is well-lit, heated, and ventilated. This position may require extended periods of standing, sitting, as well as some repetitive movements, bending, and lifting of minimal weight.
