A Senior Transportation Engineer will oversee and execute engineering tasks related to transportation on various design projects of moderate to significant scale, as well as projects focused solely on transportation engineering.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Leading transportation engineering efforts as the primary project engineer, which encompasses analysis and design for highways, urban roads, bridges, site grading, stormwater management, hydrology, and drainage systems; supervising the work of junior engineers and technicians; coordinating with other engineering disciplines; managing the creation of contract documents; and ensuring adherence to project budgets and timelines.
- Collaborating within a multi-disciplinary design team.
- Engaging with clients to define and confirm project scopes.
- Creating marketing and presentation materials as needed.
- Seeking guidance from senior engineers and department heads to address technical and coordination challenges.
- Supervising the work of junior engineers and CAD technicians, especially when complex issues arise.
- Providing transportation services during the bidding process, including preparing addenda and tabulating bids.
- Offering support during the construction phase, including site visits, responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings.
- Adhering to the company's quality control standards and procedures.
- Collaborating with managing principals, project managers, design managers, operations directors, and senior management.
- Participating in team meetings and coordinating efforts with team members.
- Training and mentoring junior transportation staff as required.
- Monitoring the professional growth of junior transportation staff.
Project Responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to:
- Executing senior civil transportation engineering tasks as assigned.
- Preparing scope and fee proposals for transportation components of multi-disciplinary or transportation-specific projects.
- Conducting project code analyses for senior engineer review.
- Producing accurate, complete, and code-compliant transportation drawings and specifications for various project phases.
- Reviewing calculations and deliverables from civil transportation engineers to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Assessing all drawings produced by transportation technicians involved in the project.
- Coordinating drawings with technical specifications.
- Ensuring work products align with other engineering disciplines.
- Incorporating feedback from quality control reviews into project documentation.
- Assisting in responding to RFIs and owner comments.
- Reviewing and addressing construction administration submittals.
- Conducting quality assurance and quality control reviews on assigned projects.
- Maintaining adherence to project budgets and schedules.
Qualifications and Experience
- A degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program in Civil Engineering or related fields.
- A post-graduate degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline may be advantageous.
- Must hold a professional engineering license in at least one U.S. state, preferably in the local area.
- Typically requires 4-6 years of relevant design experience in a leadership capacity within a transportation engineering firm or multi-disciplinary architectural and engineering firm.
- Preferred: NCEES record for licensure through reciprocity.
- Understanding of sustainable design principles and LEED AP accreditation is a plus.
- Additional certifications such as PTOE are encouraged to demonstrate professional growth.
- Active involvement in professional organizations such as ITE, ASHE, or ASCE is desirable.
- Proficiency in current company software for documentation and project management is expected.
- Familiarity with design software to effectively communicate with support staff is highly desirable.
- Experience in grading, stormwater management, and related design practices is preferred.
