A Senior Civil Engineer will oversee and execute civil engineering responsibilities on diverse building design initiatives, ranging from small-scale to extensive projects, including those focused solely on civil engineering.
Key Responsibilities encompass, but are not limited to:
- Leading civil engineering tasks as a principal project engineer, which includes analysis and design related to utilities, roadways, site grading, stormwater management, erosion control, and site plan development; collaborating with other design disciplines; guiding the creation of contract documents; and ensuring adherence to project budgets and timelines.
- Contributing to a multi-disciplinary design team.
- Engaging with clients to establish and confirm the scope of work.
- Preparing marketing and presentation materials as required.
- Seeking advice from Senior Engineers and the Department Head when necessary to address technical and coordination challenges.
- Supervising and mentoring the work of junior engineers, CAD Technicians, and other project staff, especially in complex situations.
- Executing civil services related to the bidding process, including the preparation of addenda and amendments, as well as bid opening and tabulation.
- Conducting civil services during the construction phase, which includes site visits, responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings.
- Adhering to the company's quality control standards and procedures.
- Collaborating with and taking direction from senior staff.
- Participating in team meetings and coordinating efforts with fellow team members.
- Guiding and supporting the professional growth of junior civil staff.
Project Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Executing tasks as directed by senior personnel.
- Drafting scope and fee proposals for the civil aspects of multi-disciplinary projects or standalone civil projects.
- Conducting project code analysis for review by the Senior Engineer.
- Producing accurate, comprehensive, and code-compliant civil drawings and specifications for schematic, design development, and construction document submissions.
- Reviewing calculations and all outputs generated by Civil II/III engineers and technicians assigned to the project, with a focus on analysis and design assumptions, input data, and output results.
- Coordinating drawings with technical specifications.
- Aligning work products with other disciplines.
- Incorporating responses to quality control comments into project documents.
- Assisting in addressing RFIs, Dr. Check comments, etc.
- Reviewing and responding to construction administration submittals.
Education, Technology, and Experience
- Graduation from an ABET-accredited engineering program in one of the following fields:
- Civil Engineering
- Civil and Environmental Engineering
- Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering
- Civil Engineering Technology
- A post-graduate degree in Civil Engineering or a related field may be considered favorably.
- Must hold a valid engineering license in at least one US state, preferably in the local jurisdiction.
- A Senior Civil Engineer typically possesses 4-6 years of substantial design and practical experience in a leadership capacity within a civil engineering firm or a multi-disciplinary architectural and engineering firm. Experience with utilities, roadways, site grading, stormwater management, erosion control, and site plan preparation is advantageous.
- Having an NCEES record to facilitate licensure through reciprocity is preferred.
- Understanding sustainable design principles and practices, with LEED AP accreditation being a plus.
- Additional certifications such as CFM, CDT, CCS, or CCCA are encouraged to demonstrate personal growth in the profession and an expanding knowledge base to enhance the design and documentation process.
- Active involvement in NSPE, ASCE, or other relevant professional organizations is desirable.
- A Senior Civil Engineer should effectively utilize current company software for word processing, email, accounting, and information management. Current programs include:

- Experience as a lead designer or civil engineer on federal, state, municipal, healthcare, commercial, higher education, or similar projects, along with experience in Design/Build and CM at Risk project delivery methods, is preferred.

Physical Requirements
This role is primarily sedentary and typically performed in an office environment. The workspace is well-lit, heated, and ventilated. This position may require extended periods of standing, sitting, as well as some repetitive movements, bending, and lifting of minimal weight.
