Position Overview:

The Somerville School District is dedicated to providing essential support beyond regular school hours for children in the community. Our afterschool programs create a secure and stimulating atmosphere for students ranging from Pre-K to 8th grade, emphasizing quality engagement and affordability.

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or a related field, complemented by hands-on experience with school-age children.
  • Candidates with an Associate's degree must possess relevant experience in a supervised childcare environment or equivalent credits along with substantial experience with school-age children.
Additional Requirements:
  • Proven experience in developing project-based curricula.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and interact with a diverse group of school-age students.
  • Experience working with children and families from varied backgrounds.
  • Skills to support students with special needs.
Physical Demands:
  • The role involves a variety of physical activities both indoors and outdoors.
  • Requires sufficient strength and stamina to engage actively with tasks and students.
  • Physical activities may include talking, seeing, hearing, walking, swimming, standing, sitting, lifting, and more.
Teaching Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate various group activities.
  • Supervise and engage with students effectively.
  • Implement discipline in accordance with program policies.
  • Maintain the classroom environment and manage supplies.
  • Ensure adherence to health and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with team members and foster relationships with families.
  • Perform additional assigned duties as needed.
Programming Duties:
  • Design and execute daily curricula aimed at holistic development.
  • Acquire necessary materials following established procedures.
  • Provide nutritious snacks and maintain accurate records.
  • Submit lesson plans in advance for review.
  • Complete other assigned tasks as necessary.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Orient new staff and substitutes.
  • Participate in meetings and professional development workshops.
  • Maintain communication with administration.
  • Engage with parents and participate in community events.
  • Fulfill other assigned duties as required.
Summer Roles:

During the summer months, responsibilities include orientation, supervision, and coordination during camp sessions.

Pre-Camp Preparation:
  • Attend camp orientation and assist with setup.
  • Introduce students to group activities and establish rules.
  • Manage schedules and set expectations.
  • Ensure the maintenance of supplies and equipment.
  • Complete other assigned tasks as needed.
Daily Tasks:
  • Supervise campers during meals and activities.
  • Manage transportation and schedules effectively.
  • Assist in clubs and group activities.
  • Collaborate with staff for planning purposes.
  • Address behavior issues and assist in activity planning.
Employment Information:
  • This is a year-round position with part-time hours.
  • Employment is in accordance with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Work hours may reach up to 18.75 hours per week.
Reporting Structure: Reports to the OST Director and Assistant Director.
