The Merchandise Specialist plays a crucial role in our organization by supporting the purchasing team with the management of product samples and various related tasks. This position collaborates closely with Assistant Buyers, under the guidance of the Senior Buyer.

The ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter with a keen interest in merchandising, possessing retail experience and/or office experience within a retail context. Responsibilities will adapt and grow with the individual’s experience and tenure, reflecting the dynamic nature of this position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor, receive, and systematically organize product samples on a daily basis.
  • Disassemble sample packaging and maintain the shipping area consistently.
  • Ensure the availability of merchandise samples for various purposes, including test kitchens, visual displays, department resets, photoshoots, and important meetings.
  • Establish and maintain lists for visual displays, cross-department promotions, and photoshoot requirements.
  • Oversee and organize the sample storage area.
  • Request any missing samples from the distribution center as necessary.
  • Coordinate the shipping of samples and inform recipients of shipment details and tracking information.
  • Manage transitions and giveaways of samples when required.
  • Compile and distribute POS SKU lists for global promotional initiatives.
  • Assist merchandise and visual teams with SKU management, promotional sessions, e-commerce updates, and signage requirements during peak times and as needed.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to manage details, prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-driven with a proactive approach to daily responsibilities.
  • Must be available to work onsite at least three days a week, with flexibility based on business needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with all cross-functional teams, including senior leadership.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; comfortable learning and navigating additional software.
  • 1+ years of retail experience and/or experience in an office setting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the retail landscape.
  • Knowledge of Sur La Table products or experience in a relevant merchandise category is advantageous.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; related retail experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift items, boxes, and merchandise samples weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Capability to remain on your feet for extended periods.
